'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
If you knew a sheet metal guy, he could build a water tight box.:D Then just a vent hole on the bottom would work.
Yeah but we don't have to build water tight. :p: I feel like my watertight ends being really good at holding water in but never seems to keep it out. :doah:

@mrk5 how about an aluminum rack with some dimples? Load the rack with fluids when you’re going on the trail. On the flip side I like a sealed compartment in case one of them leaks.

I vote make it open, not sealed. Better to see them and rotate them out. Also see right away if one starts leaking. I have some spare fluids in the closed toolbox of my dually. Never see them and always forget about them.

If you put a drain in the bottom with a 1" to 2" nipple on it, I believe that will help a bunch with splash infiltration.

I know me, I'll put them in there and never touch them again. At least not until I put a new/used transmission in my son's car and it takes way more fluid to refill than I anticipated. :rotfl: That's how I used up all the trans fluid I had stashed in the crew cab last time. We were scrounging for every quart we could find.

I think I'm going to start out with an attempt at a sealed compartment and see how it works out. I think what really causes me trouble is snow. It hangs around melting slowly and finds all of the little infiltration points.

I've been keeping them in ammo boxes which contains leaks. I've found the biggest trouble is bottles that have been opened. I sometimes think it would be interesting to find some sort of reusable container that seals better than the typical quart bottle.

That's a good thought.

The bed we made for Nick's Sledgehammer has built in tool boxes that are not water tight. After every winter I find a couple of inches of water in the bottom of one tool box. We had to replace all of his metal tool boxes with plastic so they wouldn't get rusted out. I should definitely try adding a nipple drain.

That's what's so fun about offroad combined with snow!!!
:saweet:
That is the trouble, snow runs are too fun to pass up on. Plus that's when we have the most fun practicing recovery techniques.

What fluids do you need and have you ever used them?
I try to carry a 2 quarts each of engine oil, trans fluid, p/s fluid, gear oil, and brake fluid (just a pint). I have used all of them and a couple of times I've given some to others. Granted I haven't needed them frequently. I figured I've got the room, I might as well carry them.

And before anyone comments, I carry the p/s fluid because I use a specific Amsoil product and do not like using trans fluid in that system. I get fussy about it because it runs my brakes and steering.

I'm lucky and SDHQ is about 2 miles from my house, easy to run down there and pick some up when I run out.

I’ve run swepco and hydraulic fluid and power steering fluid and transmission fluid through my power steering. All worked the same. Swepco actually was the worst of them all. Trans fluid was the best.

You should let PSC and Howe know, I think they'll disagree.

I let PSC know and they said meh so screw em. But I’ll never run PSC on another rig as long as I live. Had nothing but crap products from them between two different vehicles. Multiple bad parts right from the box. Constant over flowing, whining, groaning, not returning to center. Replaced boxes, pumps, added coolers, used their fluids. Their stuff sucks.

LOL, "I couldn't get it to work so their stuff sucks" AKA "I didn't use their parts properly so it didn't work properly".

I too have blown up a lot of power steering parts, but most of it was my fault.

Driving on pavement is so hard to do. I’ve warrantied multiple boxes and multiple pumps and had issues with every single one. O’reilly’s reman’s work perfect every time.
