'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Is changing the sending unit from the top an option? I don't remember what you have for flooring.

Yeah no access. Got to drop it. There’s three layers of stuff above the floor. There’s the rubber floor, 3/4” plywood and then a half inch thick rubber bed mat.

It’s not a big deal to drop the tank as long as the level is below half or less. I have to drop the tank anyway to facilitate installing the charcoal canister for the evap system. It will be above the front of the tank under the floor.

More ORD goodness arrived today. Had to order more bushings as I ordered the wrong stuff last time. I had ordered a kit for the correct springs but chose one for doing a dodge d60 swap. I noticed when they showed up the edges of the spring bushings were thinner on one side than the other. My mistake. So I needed to get the right ones.

While on the ORD site I realized I needed the rear shock mount support brackets since my frame mount on the passenger side has consistently come loose.

I’ll hold on to the d60 swap bushings on the off chance I find one. I have been casually looking but not really pushing too hard on that.

I need a couple more items and it will be time to roll it in the back and get going.

Transmission is down and out. @Capt Ron showed up a little after 10 this morning. I spent 20 minutes moving cars around and the trans was on the ground by noon.

It’s everything I expected. Input bearing is loose and sloppy. The loose input shaft hogged out the inside of the integrated release bearing. It’s toast. I wiped my finger though the bottom of the output hosing and was rewarded with some jumbo metal flake silver paint like mess.

Release bearing carnage.

Oddly the two bottom bolts for the trans to bell housing are MIA. Uppers were present but at less than spec for torque.

At this point I’m not sure which came first. The trans was not loose to the bell housing until we took the cross member off. It’s fairly sandwiched in when everything is in place but I’m going to pull the bell and the clutch to replace the pilot bushing as cheap insurance. Clutch fingers are not chewed up at all. So I think it’s ok to reuse.

My tranny builder and I had a misunderstanding and built me a 29 spline Dodge version. Noticed when I went to pick it up yesterday.
He was really good about it and will have a Chevy version ready by Tuesday. He brought me in and gave me the nickel tour of the shop. Manual trans and t-cases all over. 4500’s, 5600’s, zf’s and Getrags. Said he had built and sold 45 nv4500s in the last few months alone. We walked through and I pointed out an early GM 4500 with the 465 style shifter. I mentioned it would be cool to have the early 6.34:1 first gear ratio over the 5.61:1 mine has and retain the bolt on shifter assembly of the later style units. He looked at me and said sure we can do that. I was always under the impression that could not be done, but he assured me he totally can. So that’s what he’s going to do.

I’m stoked. Fresh trans, and a little more gear. It would bump my crawl ratio up from 62:1 to 70:1. It pales to a doubler but really will aid on the steep downhill runs where it seemed like to be lacking.

Big thanks to Ron for swinging by this morning and helping me pull the trans and get it loaded in my truck.

Sloppy Sally has definitely had her gears banged

Who’s the tranny builder?

Steve’s transmission and gears. Guy and his son running the biz.

He had a pallet of nv5600 cores for the diesel guys at ATS by the house over here at 52nd and Ward. He builds all the manual trans units for them.

You know @ZooMad75 they didn’t give me much grief when I splattered the 465
:dunno:
While I hurt it, unlike our slushbox brothers the manual trans got me home from western AZ. Just like you killing second and driving back from Moab.

The slushbox guys just get jealous at the fact that ours might break but still get home without the aid of a tow truck. At this point, one hurt nv4500 still doesn't stack up to the dead bodies of 4L60's stacked up in @Babaganoosh's closet.
