'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Do you ever hang up on your crossmember or transfer case?

Martin
Haven’t so far. I was concerned about cracking the aluminum 241 housing like an egg so I snagged a skid plate from another ck5’er. I’ve yet to get a scratch on the skid.

Outside of my fun at Blazer Bash I really don’t push to do crazy rock climbing with this truck. So I haven’t put it into too many situations where I would be at risk of dragging the belly bad.

I hope that is the last time the bottom of your differential looks so good, because it would mean you are getting out and using the truck!
:saweet:

Looking good, BTW.
Thanks. The diff will be scuffed up on the first trail ride. Damn thing hangs so low it’s hard not to hit stuff.

But I do have a teeny update. My buddy Bill came up to Denver to bring me down to pick up my K5 and go to Larry’s 50th birthday party. I had to dig through my boxes in the garage to find the bezels and turn signal housings before I came down.

Stopped by Larry’s before the party and tossed the parts on, finally. It’s got a complete face and I love it. Now it’s time to start prepping for the next trip. Bill and I are going to head to AZ and take on the AZ peace trail.

I do need to aim the headlights. They are all over the place right now.

I don’t remember your fender and door being messed up when did that happen?
Edit: Never mind, I went back and found it in your thread. I didn’t even notice it at BB

Shoot it’s been messed up since two days before blazer bash last year. Fender upper bolts backed off on top of the world outside of town. I zipped the bolt tight inside the door jamb without checking the fit between the door and the fender. Shut the door and sure enough the fender had pushed back and overlapped the door to the point I couldn’t open it. Then I spent the next hour trying to get the door open. Ended up finally getting the door open (screwing up the door and fender in the process) and had to take a ratchet strap to pull on the rear edge of the fender forward to get enough room to allow the door to at least open.

Larry already has a door that will work. Need to find a fender and get some doeskin tan paint mixed up to get at least the right color on both.

Root cause to the ongoing problem of the upper fender bolts backing off is the tires on both sides are clearancing the fenders when they go up and back under compression. Previous fenders folded up nicely on the rear lip and didn’t touch nearly as much but these were fresh and had not touched before hitting top of the world.

With 4” lift and 35’s and the wheeling I have done I’m just going to need more room. Even more so if I put some better springs on it. So I’m going to get a set of bushwhacker cut out flares. It will give me better tire coverage and give me almost two inches on either side of the opening.

Very cool hope catch you as you go by on the Peace Trail.
I have an 84 blue driver door that I should rehome.

@Wes Harden I’ll let you know when we are getting closer to taking off for AZ.

Thanks for the Nova inspiration. I’ve got some ideas floating around my brain on what to do with mine. Going to have to get a lot of stuff done before I can bring it home. But that don’t stop me from thinking what to do.

Had to do a couple little things to get ready for the run to AZ. Had to swap out the laptop mount for the new iPad mount I bought. While was there I thought I could fix the ashtray door that the springs popped loose on so it would t stay up. The usb outlet in that spot wasn’t working either.

I went ahead and unplugged everything to remove the door assembly. Note to self, take a pic before pulling wires or label them before removing. Anyway the stupid return springs are a giant pain in the ass to get back into position. But I got it.

So I had to reconnect the wiring. I assumed I would remember where it all went. Nope. I remembered half but I spent the next couple of hours backtracking the wiring. Thankfully I had labeled the power wires at the fuse block. I just had to confirm the other end with a continuity check. Then figure out which terminals were what on the switches.

I get it all working, or so I thought and go to put the assembly back in and I hear a fuse pop. Back to rechecking stuff. I ran out of fuses and had to grab more. Back to the truck I found two wires reversed and got everything working again. Burned most of the day on it.

After getting all that done I grabbed some gear from the garage for the trip. I could not find my trasharoo bag for the spare tire. Tore a bunch of stuff apart but my stuff is three rows deep in the garage and can’t find it. Argh.

Some pics of the days fun. Ram mount switch over from laptop mode to iPad. Really stout.

The new tool bag was helpful.

Got stuff getting charged up, go pros, GPS receivers along with other stuff.

I’ll load up and head for Bill’s tomorrow.

Is your release bearing and driveshaft gonna make it?

The release bearing hasn’t made a squeak since one cold morning at Larry’s house. Didn’t make any noise at all to Denver. Drove it yesterday to my sisters place, no noise.

The driveshaft took a good amount of grease when I change the oil the last time I did it at the shop a couple months ago. But up until last week I didn’t have any extra funds to address the concern of his.

Confirmation….lol.

We are just going to be out for the week. Bill’s girlfriend needs to be back by next Saturday. By the current weather forecast it should decent temp wise all over. We look to get on the peace trail on the eastern side of the loop but I’m not 100% sure where.

For you and anybody else to follow along digitally check the link below. It will take you to my Garmin map share page.

Weather is turning Monday afternoon here so we picked a good time for the desert.

Made it to Bill’s with an uneventful drive. We all went to store to grab groceries. I did a really quick pack job in the dark. Cold stuff in the fridge the rest in the cabinet.

I had not turned the fridge on until leaving Denver. An hour later the fridge was at 30 degrees. I love that damn fridge.

We bug out at 5:00 am.
