Finally a man - Got my own trailer

yes you could mount the winch on the fence so it pulls against it's base instead or a shear on the bolts

If this were my trailer, I would run one piece of steel across the tongue (red) and mount your winch plate (orange) on top of that and the front channel of the deck. This will not fail as you winch vs bending a vertical plate in the center back and forth until something gives.

I like the idea of kennyw. I used to work at a truck equipment shop and we would fabricate a bunch of trailers somewhat like that drawing to mount winches and hydraulic units. We would mostly use 1/4" x 4" flat and weld it straight to the channel iron of the trailer, cutting the metal for the angles to match the trailer angles and leaving about a 1/2" from being flush on each side to get a solid weld.

Got my tie downs installed this weekend. Rated at 6k each with 1/4” backing plates and secured with grade 8 bolts.

New gears in the tundra were good for a full 2mpg bump in towing mileage and now able to hold 70 in 5th as opposed to 65 in 4th. Now to source some steel to build the winch mount so I can pick up the 4Runner this coming weekend.

Picked up some 2” square tube that’s 1/8” thick. Wanted 1/4” but I’m not buying a 12’ stick at $9/ft when all I need is 3’. I’m going to go ahead and just weld two vertical posts in and bolt the winch to that for the time being. It’ll be fine to load//unload the 4Runner on to the trailer. This winter I’ll do what @kennyw recommended because I like it better but life and time just needed something quick simple and cheap.

Rewired it today. 7 wire trunk all the way from truck to back of trailer. Heat shrink connectors for the circuits. 12ga brake and power and 14ga for everything else. Back up light wire. LED tails and markers.

What are some things I could use the power wire for?

charge your winch battery maybe some cool led work/loading lights ?

oooo oooo color changing rock lights in the fenders :rotfl:

From the reading I’ve done, won’t supply enough power for a good charge on a battery.

The color changing rock//work lights has crossed my mind several times hahaha.

You will have no trouble charging the battery on your trailer if you tow it far enough. I charge the battery that powers both the hydraulic pump and 12K winch on my tilt deck with nothing but the two rig 7-pin connection.

Got the trailer brakes installed this weekend before heading to the hill country. Took way longer to break in than the instructions said they would and required a full load to do it but after the first 100 miles I had turned the controller down from 10 to 5.

General question, thoughts on putting brakes on the other axle? Currently they are just on the rear axle and do a great job but I’m always a fan of having more brakes. Wondering if there is such a thing as to much braking power. Trailer has dual 3500lb axles and at the moment I don’t plan on hauling more than the rzr and quad. We are planning on dragging it to Tennessee next summer and they’ve got actual hills compared to us. Just thinking about brake fade and what not.

Also, what do y’all do for deck boards? Just regular treated pine or something else? If treated pine, do you let it dry for a while before installing or just bolt it in wet?

I've ran single axle braking on a trailer that hauls way more weight than yours all over in real mountains and have had no issues. I'd also like more braking but I haven't ever needed it and rarely turn my brake controller up a lot. Too much braking will just make it so you will always have your controller turned way down or you will be eating tires when they skid all the time from not enough traction. I would not even worry about adding brakes to the second axle if this will be mostly just a single machine trailer and possibly a vehicle every once in a while.

I don't see how this is any different than the house battery in a camper. It does take a while to charge, but a lot of vehicles will increase the voltage when you select tow/haul.

Do yall think that angled piece coming from under the tool box down towards the tongue is doing anything? I’d like to cut it out and put a tool box right there and eliminate the one in the cargo area.
