GsxrMike's build thread...Frostbite 2011 Pictures are in!

I agree.....this would be the best option. I would cut the hoop at a 45* and just cut the sleeve 90* both ends though.

I would cut out what you need, make an internal sleeve with the ends cut st 45 degrees, drill a few holes in the ends by where you cut to plug weld in too and make your V or X in the pillar.

its best to cut your sleeve at an angle so the stress is spread over a longer distance internally.

More progress on cage

Here are some pics of my cage progress. They are kinda hard to see because they were taken in my basement.

Which one of these designs would you guys choose for the top of the cage? Each rectangle would be over each set of seats. The left rectangle over the rear seats and the right over the front seats. I think I am going to go with the blue design but wanted feedback first.

I would do the blue. I would add a forward tube and go down the windshield. Your building a cage, not a jail cell. If you design it correctly it will be fine.
Here was my old K5. Because of the soft top I had to make the cage low and that is why the bars have a bend in them for headroom. Straight tubes will be tons stronger.

th blue is much easier design and has a lot less welds that could possibly break.its perfectly triangulated and should give more than enough protection from side rolls.

Here are some pics of progress and layout.

Do you guys think I should add another tube in the middle of the two angled tubes over the rear passenger area (like the front is)?

More pics.

I think I may have made the cage just a bit low because head room in the back is going to be very tight. I can make up for it in the front just a bit by lowering the seats but I am just going to bolt the seats to the floor in the back and it is still tight. Luckily I am 6'3''ish so most of my passengers will be a bit shorter.

I like how wide and tall you made the cage Nice work.

Thanks! I think I have the rest of my cage figured out so as soon as I get some time I will be knocking it out.

I also bought a 6" cross-slide vise to bolt down to my drill press which will make notching the rest of the tubes much easier!

New notching setup!

Well I got the cross slide vise mounted and did a test cut and it works pretty good. Probably not as good as a notcher but hey, I can use this for other stuff and it was a hell of a lot cheaper!

Not sure how you do it but I have a tool (can't remember name) but its V shaped with a center punch in the center and a level on it. You can set it on tube, make level, then hit center punch to be on top.

I just picked up a Notch Master. That thing is awesome. Tons better than my HF notcher.

Slick. How do you center the hole saw on the tube? Magic eyeball?

Yep! The cool thing is after I start the cut it is very easy to see if I am centered and if I am not I can just turn the little knob on the vise and keep cutting. The vise was about $85 and they wanted $230 for their cheapest notcher.

Well I got alot done over the last two days. Here are some pictures of the cage, my youngest son helping hold down a seat, and....wait for it.... my new (to me) 400sbc! WHOO! HOO!
