If you were going to build a small tube buggy....

I like the idea, but I think starting with a quad motor is the wrong way to go if you want a 4 wheel drive. Then again I am not big on the whole side by side craze.

I would use the front wheel drive car motor if you go 4wheel drive and build a small two seater. Out in the sand more power is more fun. I doubt you could build a single seat 4 wheel drive buggy light enough to make a quad motor fun. It would get around, but it would be slow.

I can't imagine it weighs a ton more than the quad. I'd want single seat just for the fact that I won't have to give people rides all day, and it makes it much lighter.

I've got a 2wd quad with paddles and the blazer for the dunes. This would be a trail rig. And I'm sure it would do ok in the sand... But that's not the main focus.

Just buy a crusty Blazer and experience the joy of cutting and bashing sheet metal.

Any idea which atv you would start with? Keeping it a single seater would definitely keep the weight and size down. Seems like their is a lot more metal in a cage enclosing you as opposed to a frame you straddle.

I think this guy has the right idea and would be what I would want to build. Probably a little much to tow behind your commuter, but I bet the blazer would handle it. Sounds like it is a little larger then you currently thinking and not as cheap, but looks like fun.

Wish I had poctures of my golf cart. Full independant A Arm front and rear. Cage and a GSX-R600 stuffed in the back. It was stupid fast. The guy who bought it from me almost killed himself in it.

Yes I realize it will add some weight. But heck we have had 2 or more people on my gpas polaris 500 (which is what I think I would use). And it still went... Heck I've towed a full size pontoon boat with it.

And that one is cool. But a lot bigger than what I'm wanting.

Heck I could just make it road legal like they do with side by sides. And drive it to trails.

Transaxle /moon buggy.

Buy a honda motor/trans and toy axles.

Run 35-37 and go stupid places.

seen one of these in action on the dirt cheep few years ago in nc woods/hills . darn little thing went everyplace basicly and also on less than 5 gal gas for the day I think he said .

For something REALLY on the cheap I'm looking at a samurai with of course your single seat tube body on it. Those axles can handle 33's alright and you can gear them to whatever need to want. My buddy out here just bought 3 complete running sami's for $1000. Im thinking of replacement parts too cuz we all know that sh*t breaks on the trail, especially when its a dedicated trail rig, and sami's are inexpensive to work on in my experience. Just my opinion, feel free to crap on it :D

However... that tubed quad looks like a whole helluva lot of fun.

Adam, what about those 1/2 scale pre-runners at SL?

Since my wife's sister just totaled my 01 kia I plan on building one of these. Motor and tranny still work, I did backyard donuts in it with the top all smashed in and no windows:D

I have a set of half tons that should hold up with 35-37s since it will have no power and lots of junk laying around to fab up most things needed.

Only thing Ill have to buy is tubing, heims for the links and air shocks. Should be relatively cheap buggy build.

I totally dig that atv tube buggy. I agree though, lose the handles, go steering wheel. Looks like a lot of tall weight in the back.

Design the top so it'll just keep rolling you right back on your wheels when you flip over. I'd dig that, something atv size, fully caged one seater, zoom zoom and who cares about flipping, put in a 5 point harness and a suspension seat :waytogo:

Plus you might not get smacked in the face with a branch :dunno:

Wonder how much play time you could get from a fully electric set up. Dual, double shaft electric motors as your diffs, cv shafts, line the "floor pan" area under your seat with small 6v(think exit signs, back up lights) batteries, all your weight is down low, add a controller and you're good :D

Edit:

Sorry, I dig electric stuff :D

And here just to give you more tube style ideas: http://www.roketa.com/product/259/0/37265.shtml

Edit2: And ya, here's another. See what I've been looking up the last hour :D Not 4wd, but light weight, engine over rear axles... don't really need it to be.

Exactly. I think it could be less tall.may need to make a bit longer for pedal room.

But I think it could be done easy and decently cheap overall.
