Project “Bad Grampa”

1991 C
If it were mine:

Lose the cat and factory muffler. Any performance muffler will be better. The Flowmasters are NOT better than the Thrush

Remove the injection pod and tighten the regulator. Somewhere with the spring squeezed half way is 15 psi. Each 1 psi increase on that injector is 4% increase in fuel flow

Run premium fuel

Check all the tune up items so that they are up to snuff. I’ve always set the base time to 0*, but maybe try +4

Then start deciding how much $$$ it’s worth to make gains.

Still debating since my after market cat that has been on my truck for over 5 years and is rattling if I should just delete when redo the exhaust?

If I lose the cat will my CEL be on and how do I get past that if it does? I actually have a plethora of leftover 40s but I know that oreillys has a 3” thrush sitting behind the counter. Not too sure about the name “thrush” though? Isn’t that like an oral yeast infection???

Fuel pressure gains sound pretty simple! As it was mentioned in PAD I’ll put a gauge on it and see where I’m at. 15psi is the magic number?

I run premium fuel in all my stuff. Back when I used to travel a lot I did some of my own tests with 85 87 and 91. Round trip ever two weeks was about 2300 miles and I ran all three for a full trip just to make sure I ruled out any chance of bad gas and I tried to gas up at the same stations. 85 about broke me and my truck ran like crap. 87 was definitely ok. 91 made a noticeable difference in mileage (IIRC 2-3mpg over 87 on average and easily 5-7mpg over 85 if not more) someone argued about it not being cost effective but when you stretch it out over 30k miles it adds up. But my biggest reason for it is around here it is ethanol free in the 91. Anyone that wants to argue about ethanol should spend a summer working with me. It will change their opinion of it for sure.

And the last thing you mentioned was tune up stuff. I replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs when I got it. And put a thermostat in it because it wasn’t getting up to operating temp. I went with a 180* but it’s still 1/4 of the way up on the gauge. Been wondering if this is keeping it from coming out of warm up mode? Not sure what it’s called. I’m not looking for huge power gains right now but I’m not opposed to putting a few bucks into it with simple stuff. I do have a set of shortys that would go on it through... forgot about them.

So unless it has a post cat O2, you should be fine

As for the Tstat, the factory program is set off 195.
So in winter it may not get warm enough to do its thing

I like any fuel pressure over 13. Modified engines seem to like more

The "thrush welded" are about the best built and sounding mufflers out imho
Good to know! The only reason I run flowmasters is because I got them for free. I’m not looking for a lot of sound out of it. The muffler has been replaced and I’m not positive but it might be some kind of cheap aftermarket muffler. I meant to look on top of it to see if it was a turbo muffler or something? Pretty small with single 3” in and dual 2.25 out. It has a little rumble to it so I bet with the cat gone it would sound pretty decent.

Yeah even on nice days it wasn’t warming up. I’m going to swap it out anyway so the heater will work better. Lol

Speaking of the heater... All the AC stuff has been replaced but it the compressor wouldn’t kick on. Thoughts? Oh and my heater hose is leaking where it goes into the manifold...
