Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

question for the masses......

could I run a simple large opening fuel fill on my tank like this, tho I would run a welded right to the tank one,

and a separate rollover vent?

what dictates that you have to have a vented, clicky cap?

is that a post 95, OBD2 thing?

Is it a carb or FI either way you may have to run a return so keep that in mind. My BBC with a carb had a return line off the fuel pump.

oh, I know that, it'll initially be running a pretty standard GM EFI style drop in pump with 3 barbs for feed, return and evap, like stock.. just extended deeper..

my question is more about the legalities of what they look at for smog inspection.. the 2 things they apparently check are the sniffer, and the gas cap..

but how does a clicky vented cap effect the system, it creates vacuum in the tank correct? just not sure how they can look at that on OBD1 vehicles, other than visually inspecting the cap.. a TBI system can run fine on a sealed fill, and separate standard vent... every boat is like that..

I just read on a forum that they remove the cap and hook it up to a machine/hose thing to see if hold pressure/leaks... :dunno: so it looks like I'll have to use one probably...

Yep. Or, run a sealed one all the time, and put your clicky one on when you smog it.

But really, it can't hurt to run the "right" cap. Any reason to not adapt a stock fill/cap setup to that tank adapter?

yup.. figured out what I'm gonna do.. tho, it'll require me picking up another 4' x 4' piece of alum and get a few more panel mounts from Kert... :doah:

basically what I'm gonna do is make a removable doghouse that goes over the tank out of alum, and bolts to those coffin tubes with the same countersinks of the rest of the panels..

than the tank will be inside just a bit smaller, except it will be about 4 to 5" shorter up at the top..

that way I can run a circular, flanged, bolt-in, modern clicky, diesel (so it can later except dizzle when I swap over from gas) fill in the side of the doghouse... than run a hose over the the welded in tank fill..

this also serves the purpose to cover and hide the GM sending unit hoses, etc... it will also keep water from sitting in that sending unit area too..

kinda like this.......

it'll also allow me to fill the truck from down on the ground by the side of the bed..i'll have my tank guy weld up the doghouse when he makes the tank...

haven't worked out the new gallon numbers but it should be between 55 and 65 gallons... it should also make the whole thing look MUCH cleaner and pro, without an exposed tank sticking out with hoses, etc...

it may be a bit large and the angle deal might f*ck it up, but the doghouse idea is the way to go no matter what fill I use.. even a generic truck type surface mount...

the one thing is, I'm more than likely gonna make the doghouse 2 piece.. 1 that's the 4 sides with just a 1" or 2" lip around the top.. than a full panel that bolts down from the top with countersinks too... so I can access the hose, pump, etc..

obviously if it where all one piece removing it with a hose attached would be problematic, even if you ran a couple foot hose to the other side of the tank...

Clicky caps are sealed. The clicky thing is just a safety so idjits dont over tighten them and when the malfunction or gets old it can cause them to leak, hence the test. You're gas tanks venting goes to the charcoal can. Then you need a separate vent up in the filler neck to displace the air when the fuel goes in because the charcoal can does not suffice as a vent for filling.

right, makes sense... :waytogo:

I've also decided to do a custom GM-style pickup/return deal... with a separate fuel level... I'll run one of our slick no moving parts fuel senders off to the side.....

than the pickup/fuel pump assembly will be a bolted down, surface mount plate, as opposed to the GM style O-ring, spinny lock ring type ones.. that way it'll be simple to change in a simpler dizzle style pickup/plate down the road...

glad I came up with the doghouse deal.. that's gonna work out awesome... and I can continue on with current plans knowing that... the tank/doghouse wont be done till july or aug, so it'll be a bit, but it's good to have it figured out..

you need to get a 500 gallon tank out by the house and buy gas now while it's relatively cheap...

yeah right, too bad ethanol has horrible shelf life...

I thought about it today, with this tank and a 20 mpg Cummins in there, I could make it to Miami, Fla on a tank of fuel... :haha:

so I'm calling to order my boxes mon or tues depending on when I get home from the boat factory.. so tonight I figured I should figure out what size the underbody boxes should be, in case the drawer price is surprisingly good and I can sneak in the other 2 boxes in this order..... they will be in a 1.5 tube surround, mounted from below with tube, like the upper drawers..

but anyway, they are relatively petite... :haha: hopefully that'll help in the pricing.. :pimp:

they will be 18" wide x 24" deep x 14" high..

the driverside storage one, the size didn't matter much... it'll be for ratchet and tow straps, jumper cables, etc...

but the ps matters as that will function as the dual bat box... since a group 27 bat is 7" wide x 12" long x 9" high, a pair's footprint will be about 14" x 12", so that should leave plenty of room on an 18" x 24" floor...

I have a few secret battery components I'll be bringing into play in this dual bat system/build, and that extra room should be perfect for them.. ;)

3 days of Google searching for fuel filler necks and doors.. giving myself a HUGE headache... :doah: :haha:

I just want to run a dizzle fill.. something like this...

http://www.fillernecksupply.com/2-cab-and-chassis-flatbed-fuel-tank-diesel-filler-neck-5-8-vent/

with a slick billet door.. something like the AMI's or Bully's.

like this...

not proving simple..... the door descriptions around the web suck... at least show multiple pics, open, closed, etc... :dunno: and the issue tends to be they are vehicle specific, not universal...

and these doors aren't cheap.. like $100 or more... kinda ghey to be buying one to actually see how it operates/fits...

I see they have a Bully that fit's the Furds... I didn't even realize they wheren't in joysey... :doah: :haha:

the biggest issue is not having components in your hands to see/operate and if they would/could work together..... the trick is to be able to marry up a door like that, to a nice short straight dizzle fill like the one I posted...

and even if I get and shorten/mod a fuel fill from say a f-250, excursion, etc, the plastic fuel neck mount behind the door will be at some stooopid angle that makes the whole setup unusable...

I'd need to figure out a way to mount the neck I linked behind the door... now if I TIG'd alum, I could easily weld some alum plate as a recessed cylinder kinda mount behind the door for the fuel neck to mount to... but alas i'm an alum idjit...

I'm sure I'll figure something out by tank time in july... I may just order a door, that neck, than figure out how to make it all work.. maybe I can have my tank guy weld something up when he does the doghouse... I'd really like to run a door of some sort, but if pushed, I could just mount that neck to the surface and have an exposed cap...

on an actual rig update.... got all the fockup :doah:cut out and ground down yesterday... cut, fitted and tacked the 4 new tubes in for the coffin wall behind the tank.... and cut and fit those 3 new alum walls for it... no pics, as it's mid process nothingness at this point..

next weekend I'll do the panel mounts for the 3 walls.. and work on getting the floor in... I'm hopeful with a good sat/sun I can actually be done with the coffin...

than I only have the tubegate panels and 4 bent corner pieces left...

it's funny you say that... "our" tractor supply here in joysey isn't all that far from the boat factory we have... way down in the middle of nowhere..

our gopher kid had to go there the other day actually for something.. he came back with a "you'd dig that place" :haha:

maybe I can sneak a visit in some time this week..
