Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

just popped on that.. fug it, tax money ;)

if I'm gonna take this apart one more time to mount posts, panels, sharkhide, etc... might as well make a little platform for this now... wish i had known this when i was doing the alum fab... :doah:

tomorrow I start working on the new light sub panel...

hmmm, black amsteel or get frisky with orange? :dunno: I'm actually considering the orange... bring a spot of color out back..... :pimp: but i wonder if it gets sh*tty looking......

and what's the advantage of a soft thimble over metal? can i run the hook right to the fairlead with both?

so, here's what's been going on at The LAB™.....

been waiting on parts, so yesterday and most of today was spent taking the dozens of small hardware boxes from McBible (that are in a larger box ;) ) and sorting them into a new rack I got.... good use for the new P-Touch......

and I also decided my Mutt-buildin bandsaw needed some luvin...

about 1/2 way done cleaning it... need to get the cooling back up and runnin too....

on a fun Mutt front, at the end of the day, the inverter came in.. so mocked that up, got my measurements, and pulled the drawer back out to do the mounts tomorrow...

tons of room... it's gonna look good, well proportioned.... and plenty of room around it...

forgot a pic with the tray out... wish i could have fit something more powerful in, but it's an odd size.. everything's too wide for it... I think this will be good enough... I'll have another source too, when I do the welder up front eventually ....

back to alum fab in the morn.... plus my 1g will be in for the winch.....

thoughts on line color fellas, safe or frisky? :ears:

think i might pop for the black Warn hook, it's on sale....

It may have been mentioned in here, can't quite remember, but didn't @AgDieseler get some reflective line? I think it's only one color and only a couple lengths:
https://www.warn.com/spydura-nightline-80ft-synthetic-rope-assembly-with-hook-102560

Maybe he can chime in with real world experience? Worth the extra cost?

You can find it cheaper through a search, but thought I'd pass along the details straight from the horses mouth, so to speak.

I'm not so concerned about visibility, the work lights throw so much light.... i was talking purely aesthetically... and really that's just my brain cuz you're really not gonna see it per se....

here's a perfect example of that..... so, I'm running 3 1 awg winch cables from the box to the back... it's 25' for all 3... I'm not gonna buy 25 of black, and red, to do that.. all one color for economy reasons... automatic thought is to do red, but I would rather any exposed cable be as 'unseen" as possible... so i went black...

off to The LAB™....

You don't need black and red, because you don't need to run ground all the way, frame is your ground

I’ve not used it in low light, but it’s super effective at being plain old bright red during the day, and it drags my heavy junk around just fine.

these are the F1, F2 and A wires... normally 2 are black, and 1 is red..
Yeah, I have no problem using black for a positive, I was just commenting on the fact a lot of people run a ground all the way from the battery to the winch.
You just need to get a good ground to the frame on both the battery and the winch, 2 short cables

I’d have no problem using all black wires. Maybe all that’s needed is a 3” sleeve of red shrink tube on the positive lead near the battery connection for a measure of safety and clarity.

got ya.... i am, sorta, running to the bat with the grd... i'm gonna run the winch grd to the main grd post on the back of the box, it's relatively close.... it's also where the eng grd wuill come back to...

yeah, i've done it in the past... and seen it tons in the boats.. this is a case where i don't mind... wire sh*t adds up quick.. ;)

that's the downside to this "protect the solenoids" gig, i had to up those 3, 2' 4awg wires to 7' 1 awg's..

only managed to get in a 1/2 day in The LAB™ ....

mount mods started here....

have a ton on my plate.. not only do i need to do final sand/sharkhide on the tray, but I also have a bunch outside to do with the side and back panel... the 1 awg came in so I'm ready to do that too.....

tucked.....

that was the last mock-up to locate the hole for the clutch lever... and wire lengths...

here's how it will be out back.... that's 5/8" thick.....

when it goes back in, it'll be for good..

need to get to some x-member mods, for the wire routing... I am going to just grd the winch with a 15" jumper for now for convenience....

those are the 2 pain in the arse things... the grd has to be installed on the winch prior to install, and dealing with the clutch lever install when you put the winch in.....

the hook will be here today, and the line early next week...
