Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

I blacked out the inner firewall stuff under the dash today and also masked off and painted the steering column....and put the faux wood thing on my steering wheel...nobody makes those, so I had to clean up the old one as best I could.

I can't bring myself to take off the steering wheel wrap...I bet that thing has been on there since 1974.

What'd you use to paint the steering column? As far as the "wood" trim on the steering wheel goes I took it off and covered it with "wood" contact paper and cut the excess off. I glued it back on and it looks great! Your truck looks amazing so far. I always look forward to seeing your progress.

I used SEM "Trim Black" on the steering column. It looks good but I am not sure it is quite as glossy as the original paint. The trim black is a satin...and I think maybe the original steering column black was a semi-gloss? :dunno:

I may attempt the contact paper thing later...hadn't thought of that. But right now I got to concentrate on getting the dynamat or whatever I use put down and the carpet put in because I get the seats back Tuesday.

I have shoulder surgery at the end of this month and I won't be doing anything with that arm for the rest of the year...so I got to get the seats back in and hopefully the door glass and tailgate glass in before the end of this month.

your rattlecan glovebox doesn't match... ;)

I was wondering when somebody would see that :haha:

I meant to take it off and let them spray it at the paint shop but I forgot all about it once it got covered up in the shop.

It's funny, it's waaaay more noticeable by the camera than in person...I am not sure I can ever get it to match now...

It may remain one of those "a funny rhing happened on the way to the paint shop" kind of things.....

Chief I did the same thing on my truck. Completely spaced on the glove box and now its no where near close to the right shade of white :doah:

I also have a '70s vintage steering wheel wrap. I like how it feels so I'm scared to remove mine and find out what secrets lurk behind it... I say leave it be

I say remove the steering wheel cover. It may be a little gummy underneath but it's nothing you can't clean up. See how nice my avatar looks?

I don't understand it, but every single time I see one of those old school steering wheel grips it's installed incorrectly. When you wrap the plastic cord around the grip as you install it, you're supposed to wrap the cord nicely in-between the holes. I've only seen two in my entire life that were done correctly, and one was one I installed on a truck I had in high school.

:dunno:

I'm trying to remember what was the deal with those wraps...my dad put them on every car he filled and sold...camaro's, mustangs, firebirds...in the 70's

Back in the day they were more comfortable, provided more grip, and looked sportier. :dunno:

Why do my seats look lighter than yours?

I figured it out...Craig's seats have a dark inner panel surrounded by the lighter color that my seats are made of
