The Beige Jimmy

The plugs are back to where they were last summer. #6 and 8 are fouled.

Can I just wire brush them off and pop them back in? They were new last summer, maybe 1-200 miles tops on them.

Also my tall chrome valve covers are too tall to fit with my EGR valve and Edelbrock adapter. So it will remain clad with the black GM Goodwrench units until further notice.
Yeah wire brush them off and stab them back in maybe just scrape the electrode with your pocket knife. I ran a 305 for years that fouled number 8 spark plug, the infamous valve seals.

My 307 fouled two plugs like that. I used to blast them in the sandblast cabinet at school, rinse in carb cleaner and air dry with the air hose. Fouled them so fast it wasn’t worth replacing them.

Clean them up and stuff them back in.

Well boys, she passed. Finally.

Now it's on to the DMV to get an Oregon title and plates. I'm thinking the blue and yellow late 50s/early 60s-style Pacific Wonderland plates would look neat.
That, or a standard design plate with a custom message.

My kids voted for the Smokey Bear plate.

I had the egr vacuum line connected to an incorrect source of vacuum. Basically I went over each line and verified placement to the diagram on the radiator support. I realized I'm missing (I think) the decel valve and had a couple lines connected to the wrong ports in the system.
When I corrected this with it idling, I had to reset the timing and it smoothed out considerably.
Set it to 4° of timing, adjusted the mixture screws for as much vacuum as I could, put in clean plugs for cylinders 6 & 8, and she passed beautifully.

Yeah, but it still feels like it has a little miss during idle. Idk what's causing 6 & 8 to foul out so quickly.
It doesn't smoke upon startup like I've heard indicates a bad valve stem seals. Could it be stuck rings? A compression test could shed some light on that.

I did have her suck down a bottle of Berryman's vitamin B12 when I was tuning on it a couple weeks back. My wife thought I'd set it on fire from all the smoke and engine noises. It runs a touch smoother now.

Blue and yellow matches the truck best in my opinion... but I can't pass up the opportunity to say that I completely back the illustrative salmon plate.

I'm down for a squarebody round up. Do you ever go to Cars and Coffee down to Sherwood?

After I put the new plates on, the fuel gauge shot up to completely full on a whim because why wouldn't it. Fun.
So I filled it up with 17 gallons of Oregon's finest and went for a little cruise.

Nike has their very own private forest. I was compelled to just do it.

Did a little grill and bezel refresh in (I believe) more accurate paint colors. Also threw down 6 coats of clear on top and left the GMC logo in its original faded paint.

I like the contrast of the broken pieces and a little bit of shine. Also upgraded to amber bulbs from white bulbs in my parking lights.

Went ahead and cleaned/straightened the fins while I was in there.

I'm stuck at home all week with coronavirus, so I've been doing some cleaning and tinkering on the old boy.

Compression test
8- 145
6- 140
4- 140
2- 140

1- 145
3- 140
5- 140
7- 135

#6 and 8 both foul plugs quickly, but #8 cakes on more carbon than 6.

I hope this rules out bad rings and is instead indicative of bad valve seals. Am I right?
