Since we are on the subject, most of you know I hit the wrecking yards almost every weekend. The steering boxes are almost always pulled from the squares within a day or two. Anybody know if Redhead or another rebuilder is buying these? I cannot believe it is a square parts hoarder like me because the trucks usually still have many good/desirable parts on them.

Look like Red Head is in WA

The company I used last time fooked up the other box I had sent them. They also did a box for @CK5 and it leaked after they were done

There seems to be a bunch of folks happy with redhead. I’ve only used west Texas offroad, no complaints with them.

Yes. There is an entire industry behind cores. The u pull yards in the springs have guys waiting for stuff to show up. I can't believe it's a big money maker.

Did they replace the piston? That is my concern. I can replace seals like any other monkey

Fact is, maybe I could replace the piston

Replacing the parts is easy. The problems start when you need to machine and sleeve areas. Specialty tools needed.

Red head 68-76 2wd box
$300 for the box w/o shipping
$150 core (all mine are drilled, doh)
but they offer port drilling as an option?
$110 for port drilling

RH
$591 shipped if I eat the core. I should ask if they will take my pre poked box

ORD has a PSC box that is 100% new, and ported for $650 before shipping
Anyone use the PSC box?

I will tell you that I drove one with a PSC box and ram on it, and the one off of the old '72 feels better. I don't get a low boost feeling in a quick turn like the PSC one would. Even tried the smaller pulley from PSC on the pump.
What I am getting at, is if you go with them, be diligent about getting it on and tested quickly so that you get any problems ironed out.
I like the results that I got from Benchmark Steering in Phoenix. However, I haven't gotten a box from them in years.
Would it be a big problem to change to the smaller input shaft?

The 72 was actually better on a modified pump I built before it crapped out. Probably too much pressure.

I'd have to get a different drive collar or steering shaft. Currently using the Flaming River one I had originally on the 72.
What does having a small shaft do for me?

Would it give you more options? As in you could have tried the one that I had my son bring to Moab. Or just more options? I honestly don't know for sure. Benchmark told me that in order to go to the faster ratio, I had to go with the smaller input.
If you were just across town, I would convince your stubborn butt to try this one..
:D

I don't really care for the XJ shaft. They haven't seemed to hold up all that well. Converting over to an Express shaft was also not in my budget plans

As it looks, both RedHead and PSC offer the 68-76 unit that will bolt in

I have had a handful rebuilt at a local place. Under 200 bucks for a total rebuild. One was a ported early bronco box, and it was a non issue for them.

I think the problem with my “rebuild” was they didn’t inspect the bore, so the piston had some damage
The one on it now I had some steering interference an compromised it

I've been running a PSC box for a while. I think I got it at the start of the crew cab build in '13. Mostly I got it because its supposed to be worked for better flow. I already had the hydroboost reworked for improved flow and I wanted a box with the same. I figure since I'm running brake booster, steering, and ram assist all on the same pump, flow is a good thing.

I did have to replace the oring on the end cap. The one that was in there must have gotten nicked during their rebuild. No problem since.
