The Green Machine - parked

I think I figured out my cold starting problem. Low cranking voltage caused by a weak battery that is caused by an overstressed alternator that can't charge the battery through heavily corroded cables. Perfect trifecta. The battery is 6 years old and the alternator and cables are both 17. I'm actually surprised the stock alternator has lasted so long, gm ones don't typically last so long it seems.

Great opportunity to ditch the stock style cables and go to some top post military style clamps. Can't wait for the excuse to do that on my 03!

The only place I have ever had trouble with side post batteries is the 1996-1999 trucks with the dual battery cables on the positive post. That is usually cured by removing the insulation from around the end of the cable, and using a real 3/8" bolt with a jamb nut.

Spent a couple hours and delayed the inevitable, cleaned all the connections at the battery, which made a large difference. However, the alternator still whines through the radio and the cables have internal corrosion so their life is limited, and the battery now maintains 12.4v after a few hours of sitting, so it's life is 1/3 done (assuming 12.6v is healthy and 12.0 is pretty much toast)

I would replace the cables, alternator and battery now but I have other places I want/need to spend my money currently.

Completely of the current subject: In your beginning photos when you got the Yukon it didn't have fender flares. Where were you able to score some? I can't find any factory flares for my 4 door. The fronts are easy, but the rear is unique to the 4 door Tahoe and Yukon and are RARE!!

I got them from Bushwacker as a set, $400 total for them plus $200 for the local paint shop to color match and install them. Only the Z71 models, (very rare) had factory flares.

Well, they look great and I've got to have a set. (There goes another $600:yikes:)

Next question: your center concole. Were you still able to have it after you installed the T-case floor shifter? Is there enough room?

That's a tricky question, since the console I currently have actually came out of a 92 Blazer, but it is more bulky than the stock console. But there are no clearance issues with it.

Good to know! The '99 concole is skinny and longer than the one you have now. when it was designed, bucket seats and a concole in a 4x4 meant push button only.
