The restoration/modification of Daisy.

Ballistic fab tube adapters showed up today. I dropped them off at my friend's house and we're gonna build the steering links tomorrow.

How did that order go? Amazed anyone was still ordering from them

just fine except the sticker was left out. i actually screwed up and double ordered (late at night, kinda drunk...) last week. called them tuesday and got the second order canceled, no issues there, called them about my forgotten sticker and they said they'd get another sent out tomorrow. so far so good.

Apparently things have gotten alot better since new management.

seems that way. i only ordered from them because they were the oly ones with the size adapters i need. i'm using 1 3/4" .120 DOM because we have a bunch of it laying around to adapters for .250 wall tube won't work. ballistic was the only place i could find that had 7/8-18tpi 1.5" ID 1.75" OD adapters.
 
Steering links are done and painted. Ill install them tonight.

Pretty welds. Should make you a nice steering set-up.


Also, am I the only one that wishes the brake rotors fit over the hub instead of behind like a newer truck? I wonder if a set of new rotors from say a 2002 truck would clear the standard hub? Then it would be a matter of fitting a caliper adaptor to line it up.
 
so these showed up today. (knife for size reference, i was surprised at how beefy they are!)

i painted them and my steering links and got everything bolted on today! the two bolts on the pass side are a little short, they work but i'm going to get longer ones this weekend. the brakes, suspension and steering are all installed!

i know it's just another truck, and just another dana 60 but i have literally dreamed of putting a 60 and crossover steering under my suburban since i was 15yrs old. this was a big night for me, it really feels like i'm making progress.

No, no, no, no, no......this will never do.

Are you sure those parts will hold up? You're going to need a guy who's willing to put those parts to the test. We'll even give him a title. Something like, "honorable Montana tester of expensive parts he himself will never be able to afford", or something like that. :dunno:

I'm even willing to nominate myself so I can put your mind at ease as to who's going to do this tough service for you. I can test these parts for, oh, say 2-3 years just to make sure their up to par for you. After all, it's a brotherhood here! :whistle:

Tell you what, I'll take all this **** off my truck (dana 60 included) and let you test it but you pay shipping both ways...

This morning I went to the hardware store and got some bolts and nuts and ****. The inboard bolts on the passenger side were just a little too short with the zero rate on the spring, they only had about a half inch of thread engagement into the differential housing, so I got new ones .5" longer.

I greased all the steering linkage and the kingpins, set the king pin preload, loctited the tire rod end jam nuts and put a lock washer on the sector shaft and loctited that as well.

then I adjusted the steering stops on the Dana 60. I hate to give up steering angle especially on a truck with 133" wheelbase but I had to limit it a little to keep from damaging my steering stabilizer and from hitting the diff cover with the tie rod. At full driver's side lock the tie rod just clears the diff cover and at full passenger side lock the steering stabilizer just barely touches the U bolts not enough to damage anything but it does just barely touch, I think will be okay as is. The stabilizer is about 1/16" away from bottomed out at full lock one way and 1/8" from maxed out the other way.

I also drilled one more hole in the frame to bolt up the engine crossmember. there were no matching holes in the frame for the side except for one so I had to drill one more. You can see it here inside the panhard bar mount.

well, i guess i'm stuck testing everything myself...

i'll get my lug nuts tomorrow, after a week, napa finally found them. my dad and brother are coming over and helping me turn Daisy around. should be fun.

My dad, brother and cousin came by and we got her turned around. The brakes and steering all worked great as far as I can tell. We dragged and pushed it with my work truck. Put a small kink in the back pass side door but it'll be ok, I can fix that. We slapped the fenders and **** back on and dropped the radiator in there to make it look functional. The park brake is a thing of the past so I came up with my own means of keeping it in place without wheel chocks.

Now I can start on rear suspension.

Haha I knew someone would say that. The guy from the city said to get rid of the chocks so the pry bar is only staying there for a week. After they check it out and close the case, ill chock the front tires and start on the rear end.
 
Thats a very dangerous and good idea!

That bar is plenty strong, it's 3/4" thick, hardened steel. I'm not worried. Next weekend ill chock the fronts and start cutting unused **** off the back of the frame, install my shackle flips and start shopping for rear disc swap parts.
 
That's a lot heavier than a parking pawl in an automatic transmission......
