The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
I haven't heard back from them yet, but the engine is back in. It was a long day, but we're moving in the right direction again.

I gave them a number and they agreed. They're sending me a check.
Part of the reason I'm not too upset is because I found an issue I caused when I pulled the engine. I'm not going to go into detail, but it would have required me to pull the engine to fix it at a later date anyways, so it all worked out.

I did take a few more pictures yesterday that I never got posted. Here's the back of the timing cover. cleaned up. The bolts were pressed into the back of it, I'm thinking that they shimmed the pump, torqued it down, put the cover on with the bolts barely started, went to go grab the loctite and got distracted. I think the timing cover was bolted on with all the pump cover bolts barely engaged, just like I found them.

New pump shimmed and installed with everything torqued and loctited as appropriate.

Engine back where it belongs.

I'm pretty beat up after 12 hours in the shop yesterday. I'm hoping to get the trans bolted up, then hook up the starter and oil pressure sender so I can see it make oil pressure. That's probably all I'll do today, my shoulder has not appreciated all the work I've been doing.

That's totally what they did. It happens, always sucks when it happens to you, but I know I've done shit like that. All it takes is the phone ringing or some other garbage to happen.

Yep, this was assembled by a person, people make mistakes, I'm glad they owned up to it and made it right. They even mentioned that they were going to change their process to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Honestly, if they can miss those bolts, they can miss any of them. Id do a complete nut/bolt check. 100%. If they dug into the cover, it should have been noticed when putting the cover on. Esp at those prices

I'm guessing they didn't touch the cover until the cover bolts were torqued, so from the outside I doubt anything felt weird. It was just the perfect spacing where the cover would still go on normally, but the bolts were pushing into the cover a bit after everything was torqued down.
Everything else had torque paint on it, so I'm not too concerned that they missed anything else.

hey this way you know the engine a little better too. And just chalk your mistake to “tuition “
We’ve all done it.

Yes, I try not to get mad when people make mistakes. It only gets me mad when they won't own up to it.
I got the engine together enough to crank it and see oil pressure, 85psi after 30 seconds of cranking :saweet:.

Another full day in the shop, my shoulder is pissed. I saw the orthopedic surgeon yesterday, he thinks it's a torn rotator cuff. I need to get an MRI to see how bad it is.
I worked on the exhaust this morning, I wanted to try out the new heat sink for the v-bands. It worked great! Not only are the flanges straight, it kept me from overheating the welds too so they look nicer!

With that done, I finished putting the rest of the engine together so I could post this video!
It's not the first startup, but it's the first one that I recorded! Over 100psi of oil pressure now so that's awesome.

I feel your pain…I’m still in PT for my rotator cuff. Rehab is goiing slightly ahead of expectations, hardest part is not using the arm more than thr recommend restriction’s. But you dont want to mess it up, its 4 mo. minimum for light duty use, and up to 1 year for full strength recovery. Plan accordingly!

We slept in today, but I had Amber's help. We swapped the gears in the rear end, so we're on the 3.73:1 gears now. We weren't ready to stop yet, so we knocked out an intake for the truck. There wasn't enough room between the radiator and the engine, so this is how it came out. I'm pretty happy with my weld on the bracket, I was hoping I could make it look halfway decent since it's right in front.

Tomorrow we'll work on the exhaust. Hopefully I can get that finished up so we can see how it sounds.
