1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

Since Idaho is one of the few states without a motorcycle helmet law, there is a lot of bikers out there.

That was my dad's house in CO. That was when I was loading it on the trailer to come out here...and yes we have lots of squares at my dads house

those tires in the bed going on that beast?
what size are they?

those are his 44's for his blazer

Yeah, those are my 44" boggers for my blazer...my brother towed my blazer out to ID a couple weeks before we fully moved out here. He towed it on a dolly so we had little rollers on it for that and I put the boggers in the back of this best on the trailer...it was a pretty heavy load for sure...hence why I wasn't surprised I lost some trailer tires on the way out...but it's all good

Glad you made it. Hopefully you get your truck going soon. It's been way cold over here by us. Sat I got called in to work at 4 am and it was -15 out. Today got up to like 15 and it actually felt warmer compared to what it has been.

I will be doing an almost identical swap to the crew in my avatar, picked up my 8.1 this weekend and I already have a nv 4500 . Please tell me you have got this thing running now.

Almost...its really, really close. I just moved from CO to Idaho, and I hooked up with @Team208Motorsports up here. We are just waiting for a time where he is in town (he's real busy) and it's not butt freaking cold, and we are pretty sure we can get it fired up. Once that happens, it's just put some exhaust on it, and register it and I'm done (well, until I paint it, and figure out what corks there are to fix on it), but very, very close

I have read your's and Larry's builds a couple of times and and I consider myself very lucky to have all the info. Thanks for posting these types of builds.

Glad it has helped, that's what it's all about. Larry has given some great info...there was some stuff I couldn't find good info on throughout the web, so I've tried to include those details in this thread to help others out. If you have any questions, let me know and I can try to help

Small little nothing update, but still waiting for Team 208 Motorsports to get back into town...he's tuning for KOH right now...so hopefully soon we can get together and get this thing fired up.

But decided to go ahead and build my own exhaust instead of have a shop do it. Was going to be about half the cost to buy all the materials and do it myself, so obviously decided to go that route. All I have done is pick up the materials as of now, probably in about 2 weeks or so going to get it all in there.

My headers have a 3" collector...so decided to go 3" off the headers and have them connect up together with a "Y" pipe...the "Y" pipe I got has the two inlets that are 3" and the one outlet converts it to 3.5" (can see the "Y" pipe in the pic below). Then into a 40 series Flowmaster (also 3.5" inlet/outlet). Then 3.5" all the way out to a 4.5" classy looking tip. From the numbers that Team 208 Motorsports was telling my stock 8.1 should put out with his tune on it, I knew it was going to flow some pretty good air, and I wanted an exhaust setup that I knew I could do some mods to my motor later on and know the exhaust was up to par (if I want to later).

Not pictured is the straight tubing I got with all this, my 4.5" tip, and some misc. clamps/hangers (shipped in two different sets). I think this setup should sound pretty nasty with this thing :D

It's going to be loud.... :yikes:

I'm curious to know how much pipe you end up with. For my swap in the crew cab I'm figuring on (2) 2.5" mandrel U-bends to get from the block hugger headers to the Y-pipe. I'm hoping to have enough straight pieces from the U-bends to not need any 2.5" pipe.

From the Y-pipe I'm doing 3.5" into a 50 series big block muffler. Figuring on (3) 4' pieces of 3.5" straight pipe and (1) 3.5" mandrel U-bend.

Please post up what you actually end up using for exhaust pieces. Should help me out since it should be about the same length as yours.

I'm a little surprised with the muffler choice being a tow vehicle but it should perform well.

Yeah, I'll take some pics of the install and give you some measurements once its in there

Performance was my main goal, and everyone knows the 40 series is a great performing muffler, and I like the tone it produces too

He's young. I've found that exhaust sound levels desired increase as age decreases. Or vice-versa. :D

I'm OK with loud but it better be fast. Otherwise I like a good tone....

I'm only 30 yrs old...so I still kinda like the loud factor to it...I want to make sure everyone knows when I drive by, that the motor under the hook ain't stock :flipoff3:. This setup should get me overall what I want out of the exhaust...should flow real well for performance, but should also have a pretty good tone to it with the 40 series. I had one of these mufflers on my old blazer in high school and I really liked the tone a lot. The whole exhaust is going to be welded except for the muffler connections...I'm going to clamp those...so should make it easier to change the tone of the exhaust as I get older and don't want to :weapon10: so much, haha

Make sure you leave enough tubing/room in the design because you'll likely have a longer muffler when you choose to run a real muffler with packing :rotfl:

and a straight through Magnaflow will perform just as well when that time comes.
