1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

Eric, I got a 12b with 3.08's you can have...:haha::haha:

I was under the impression that the 30 spline 10 bolt is actually stronger than the 12 bolt, cause the 10 bolt has better pinion support. Not sure where I heard that from.

I've read that here too. The 10 bolt has a larger pinion bearing than the 12, the 12 has a larger ring gear. Both can be fragged at will, particularly with the Gov lock.

FWIW I have a 12 bolt under my '90 right now with 35's. it's my short term diff so it stays driveable until I'm ready for the 60/14 to go in.

The 12 bolt will be a short term thing for this truck too. A 14 bolt sf, 6 lug will eventually find its way under the truck. But for now its a cheap way to regear.

The bonus here too is that I have found 14 sf 6 lugs local with 4.10s

Okay so plans changed I found a set of 10 bolts that had been regeard to 4.56, or so the guy says. I actually think they are 4.10s but haven't drained the oil out of em yet to look at the pinion gear and count the teeth. They are definitely aftermarket gears though.

So instead of a 12b and 10b geared to 4.10 I will have 2 10 bolts geared to 4.56.

Sooner than later I would like to run 37s so this gearing will work out better. It will be a while though I will run the tires I have down.

Also a small update on other stuff. I took the dash apart today to replace some dash lights. Working at a leisurely pace. Well I go to pull the cluster out a bit to undo the speedo cable, it won't pull out far enough for me to get my hand back there and undo anything.

So tomorrow I suppose I shall see if I can loosen up the speedo cable enough to get my hand behind the dash.

You know eventually you are going to stuff a 60/14b combo in there... and there's no time like the present :thumb: Just messing man, but if I were a betting man I'd say within the next 5 years that thing with have tons and 40s at least...

I would have to agree and not because I'm selling some either, actually I only have 1 front left. Sixty's are selling cheap around here so I would just go for it.

That's a start.

Probably true but the temptation isn't nearly as great because I have Horton.

I am all over the place with where exactly I want this to go. I know someday I want to run 38s or 40s, but I also am going to want selectable lockers. Coils front and rear, or possibly coils in the front and bags in the back.

I don't ever want to lose the ability to hop in and drive this Jimmy a thousand miles if I want, so every mod I do will have to be very thought out.

For now this will let the trans shift into overdrive. I am almost sure this thing has 3.42s. With the 35s its harsh, takes me a whole on ramp and then some to get to 65

Once I get the drivetrain very solid. I am going to start on interior stuff and body work. Suspension and cool off road mods are last on my list with this thing.

I thought you had something good going with the plan to have the the 14BSF and 4.10s. Good gear ratio for the 35s and it keeps with the road worthy platform.

Nice K5 for a build by the way. There seems to be a growing appreciation for the 89 K5 Silverado Diesel around here.

That is still the long term plan, hoping to have the SF axle in there by mid summer,

Later it will get an ARB will probably leave the front open for some time.

I don't mind trading a little road speed for the 4.56s and the 35s for now either.

Have really enjoyed driving a lifted truck around.

Winter time means I am not really doing alot to it.

I did get a set of manual hubs last weekend and I may put a smittybilt cage in it. Going to test fit it after I get it up here and see if I like it or not.

35s + OD + 4.56s = Good. Especially after having a M1008, that combo sounds heaven sent in a diesel.

That's what I have in mine, 700r/4:56s/35. Real nice around town and short highway trips (rpms get a little high and kill mileage some and it gets noisy). You'll be happy with that combo.

Finally got this thing in my garage. Axles getting prepped, trans needs some cleanup and will be ready to go in. Should be running awesome again in a couple days.

Only problem I found is I am pretty sure my fancy CV rear driveline the cv is toast. Will know more when I take it out tomorrow

Can't wait to have 4.56 gears :woot:

Cool Eric, garage warm yet?

Yep last night I was down to just a t shirt. but I broke my creeper so I had to run a trailer load of trash to the dump today and do some other running around. Plus buy a new creeper.

So I should be outside working right now but I am here.

So since I want to keep all the stuff I do and all the questions I have in my build thread, I have a 14b SF question.

I can get one out of a Van (didn't look I assume its a 14b SF and not a SF 60).

Problem is its 8 lug and I need it to be 6 lug. I have read just changing the shafts to the 6 lug will do it. I also assume the brake drum (duh) but do you have to change any of the other brake stuff?

So I found all my vibrations. Its weird but when I shook this driveshaft under the truck it didn't feel loose at all. Now having it out its fairly obvious that the cv is shot. So much for a fancy slip yoke cv shaft. Going to have to fix it though. Bummed about it because it won't be cheap to fix

I do not know who made this driveshaft (I think I do but since I have no idea I won't name names) but the welds SUCK

Not that I have ever rebuild a CV'D driveshaft but can you just replace the u-joints in it.

Oh and I did not do the welding

Backing plates, brake hardware, and a new drum. I know someone did it recently, and there was a fair amount of work to do it. It is something I have considered doing to mine, but I haven't gotten very far in thinking about it. The 6 lug axles are a bit longer if I remember right, so it will push the rear wheels out a small amount.
