'71 K5 Blazer CST "Mean Green"

I got ya.

I wondered if the straps were integral to supporting the fuel tank. On a smooth road, maybe no big deal, but if you are flexing at all, I imagine there would be a lot of stress on the bolt locations and the tank itself if it is bolted directly to the frame.

In case you were interested this is how the original install was, before a new tank was put in:

The spacers and anti squeak at the frame might help you still. The way they have it bolted in the service manual also makes it so you don't have to get a tool above the frame to get the bolts off, so those U-bolts might be handy for you. I think I've seen guys make those, as getting them in the right dimension could prove tricky.

More than one way to skin a cat, as they say. I look forward to your progress!

That helps a lot. He just used standard hardware holding the straps so the u bolts would make it a lot easier for tightening up. Rubber isolaters would be nice too. I'll prob run the factory route then. Thanks.

Had some time to burn, so I went out to the shop and pulled all the old plugs, wires, distributor, radiator, and thermostat. It's been a while since I've seen an old stat like that. All needs to be replaced. I have a hei I need to throw some new parts at and drop in too. Hope all the ignition parts clears up the horrible lack of power and rev.

My right rear leaf spring is broken in places. Going to try and find a set of later model rear springs to replace mine with. A guy on one of the fb pages I follow said they fit and ride a bit better too.

How the heck do you get at the back bolt on that style distributor cap to remove it? I got three of the four off on mine, but the back one is right up on the firewall and I can't get my hand and screwdriver back there to undo it. Do you have to pull the plug wires off the cap to get at it?

Pretty sure I saw that conversation this morning, and if you are Jake and that guy was Greg, then it is in fact @Greg72 over here, with the "Might As Well™" Build.

If you're referring to the hei cap, you just turn it it access the last clamp/screw. Small screw driver usually works well too.

Thanks. I actually managed to get it today by using a long (3") flat head bit and some channel locks attached to it. That got me the angle I needed. Finally got my motor out and didn't have to worry about breaking that cap off!

Looking forward to your build. Not a ton of rust on it, but it's definitely going to take some work!

Thanks Yeah it has some rust and needs to be completely gone through. I just want a fun driver I can beat on and not worry about messing up too badly. Hope to have it road worthy in the near future.

Put my hei in with a new cap and rotor, the new plugs and wires too. Didn't do a compression test because the battery is weak in this thing even with a charger on it. It fired right up, runs a tad smoother, but still no power. It's probably tired. Only took a pic of it in the wild habitat not under the hood, cause I ran the wires quickly just to see if it fixed it and don't want any guff.
