major setback

I got the blazer registered today so I took it out for a bit this evening. A bit of good news first. It seems to run very well. It most certainly has more power than my old carb'd 383. Also, my speedometer actually is working. I drove around quite a bit and noticed that my odometer had actually gone up a few miles. After careful observation at 50mph+ I noticed that the speedo was reading a couple of miles per hour so it is working just need to adjust the programming to the right pulse rate.

Now on to the bad news...

It's hard to tell from the pic but that is the back of the drivers side head and I'm pretty sure it's leaking oil. :( For as little driving as I did it was kinda a lot of oil, and I think the passenger side is doing the same thing.

It was late when I got home so I didn't have a chance to do anything but give it a once over and noticed oil on the pan and traced it up to whats shown in the pic. *&%$*#!! :frown1:

Yup, I know that feeling on leaks. Frustrating as heck. But, hey, you got to drive it!!

You guys are right, it is driving, so best to look on the bright side. :)

Looking at it late last night I had myself pretty worked up because it looks like it's leaking from the head gasket but that can't be true, right? I'd be getting a coolant leak not oil if that was the case, right?

If it's coming from that high up it pretty much has to be either the valve covers or maybe the oil pressure sending unit, right?

Some one give me some good news...

Get down from the cliff there's no need to jump just yet :D.

There isn't any pressurized oil through the head gaskets so you're good. The leak will most likely be the oil pressure sender since it's right above the spot in the picture. You should be able to see it with a mirror and a flashlight and they aren't too bad to do with the intake in place with the right socket and a wobbly.

What did you find with the speedo?

Thanks for talking me down.

I didn't change anything with it, just noticed that I was getting some movement on the dial if I got going fast enough. I'll double check my documentation to find out what pulse rate the VSS is sending and then we can check to see what the PCM is looking for. I suspect that everything is hooked up correctly but there is just some mismatch there or with the speedo itself.

My oil pressure sender started leaking soon after I began driving mine regularly, I'll bet that's what it is.

I am using an aftermarket sending unit that I mounted remotely so it's quite possible that one of the fittings between the port and the line are loose.

Hopefully it is that easy.

Doesn't that mean you should just be driving faster? :dunno:

I'm sure you'll get the oil leak fixed in short order. No LS engine for me but the oil pressure sender was causing a good leak and some grief for me on my sb for a while.

It's great watching all your progress. Your exhaust turned out great...would love to do something like that on mine, wish the junkyard wasn't 30 miles away. Around $200 bucks, that's freakin awesome! :waytogo:

Me thinks it's the Cookie Gods getting some revenge on ya.....

Better fix it fast. :D
LOL, I gotta say, if an 8.1L would have been available it would have been VERY tempting. :D

Thanks man, appreciate it.

Haven't had a chance to look at the leak yet today... hopefully soon.

turns out it was just the valve cover gaskets. both sides were leaking pretty badly. Once I got the covers off it was obvious that the gaskets were shot.

Here you can see how flat they were compared to the new ones. They were flat like that all the way around and there was oil on the whole surface. I'm surprised the oil leaks weren't worse than they were. $14 and an hour of my time and all the leaks were fixed. I keep tossing around words like "major setback" for minor oil leaks and I'm going to have to change this build to "the overreaction build".

I had a chance to drive it around a bunch yesterday and the leak problems seem to be gone. :thumb:

I do have a problem with my transfer case or tranny though. I'm getting a god awful noise when I'm decelerating or just not under power but only at higher speeds (40mph + I'd guess). Under power it seems fine. The transfer case was low on fluid but I topped it off and it didn't seem to change much.

I pulled the front driveline to see if that made any difference and if anything, it got worse.

Any ideas? Do I need to rebuild my transfer case? Is there some adjustment I can make? It's a 208. :dunno:

I guess it's possible it's the transmission itself but I'm leaning towards transfer case atm.

Same engine and trans as before? And did it make this noise before?
It did do it before but it wasn't nearly as bad. Maybe sitting for a few months did it no favors.

Do I need any special tools for a transfer case rebuild? I've never torn one apart before.

Glad the leak was just valve covers.

As for the noise from the drivetrain, you're sure it's in 2wd? I know there's an adjustment on some cases for the shifter. It might just be part way in 4 high. Otherwise I'm no help about the 241. I've never been in one, but my 205 was extremely easy to go through. No special tools needed.

One of my tests was to disconnect the shift handle from the transfer case and just shift it all the way back from under the truck. I was hoping it was just an engagement issue too. No dice, still made the noise. :(

Mine is a 208 but hopefully it isn't too bad. I'm taking the blazer down to bigblock72 on wednesday to look at the PCM issues so I'll get his opinion on it as well before I do anything.

I'm no help on a 208. Have you put the back end up on jack stands and put it in gear just to see if that helps chasing it down?
