Forgot to mention that my Keychain came in. He actually sent me the lowered version first, but he quickly sent out the right one after I contacted him.

I like it.

I've got a couple of those too. A lifted first gen K5 and shortbox and a lifted second gen K5 and short box. Shipping took awhile, but other than that I'm happy with them. Detail is pretty good.

It's time to buy some gears!

It's finally time to start work on the 14 bolt sf axle I bought, so I need to buy gears (4.56) and a locker. Where is the best place to purchase both? I have a detroit in the 12 bolt and I've been happy with it, so I plan on putting the same thing in the 14 bolt unless someone has a better idea.

I'm trying to keep the cost within reason, especially considering I need to regear the D44 up front as well. I'd like to put a true locker up front as well since I'm pretty sure its only a limited slip up there now.

Suggestions anyone?

In a D44 I would run an Aussie Locker assuming they're still as good as they were 8 years ago. But I haven't shopped lockers in a long time.

I have Yukon gears I bought from ORD and they seem to have held up well. Course I only put a few thousand miles on the pickup each year, and the same for the K5 before that.

I'll look into it, thanks.

I don't drive the blazer a bunch, so as long as they are quiet and the cost is reasonable I'm sure they'll last just fine for me.

put a 60 in before you re-gear the 44, just sayin............
Baby steps... I can't justify the cost of going 8 lug at this point. Just tires and rims puts it out of reach, not to mention everything else that comes with it.

Yukon.

Detroit in the rear.

Lock right or the Aussie in the front. (or do what Keith said).

Oh, and on the D44, I have 3.73's in it now, so if I go 4.56 I need to get thick cut gears because of the carrier split, but do lockers replace all that, so I just get the locker for the 3.92 and up with the ring and pinion I want?

After installing a SF14 in my '90, I definitely see that it should be good for the mid-range stuff!
I am glad that I did it and kept my 6 lugs.
I haven't pushed it hard, but after looking around at what has been done with one, and the size of the parts, I feel confident in it for me.

depends on what size tires and trans he is running..why 4.88s?
ive got 4.56 and love it... but could go 5.13s if were throwing numbers out there.. just sayin.. hah

Simply cause I'm a fan of a little more gearing. I usually recommend it to people, rarely does anyone not like it.

yeah i never saw a real difference between 4:10 and 4:56 so when i had to regear my front d60 i thought of going 5:13 as its the same cost but then would need to do the back. since stock was 4:56 i kept that. now not sure how much of a jump 5:13 is ....
so detroits front and back with a 4:56 match up front

@ashman what do you spend most of your time doing while driving the Blazer?
Hard to say exactly. I guess "most" of the time is spent cruising up to the mountains, and running mild dirt trails. That said, I also like to do a bit of rock crawling and usually make 1 or 2 trips down to Moab a year.

Now that I have an automatic, getting lower gears isn't a huge issue with the rock crawling, but cruising around it feels a little weak on take off and at my preferred cruising speed it seems to want to be between 3rd and 4th gear. I want to get gears that will give me a nice punch at take off, and be well into overdrive when I'm at cruising speed (70-75mph).

So.... why not just keep the 3:73 in it ?

What gears are in the 14 bolt now?
With the 35" tires, the 3.73s feel soggy. I don't remember for sure on the 14 bolt. I think it was 4.10s, but it might be 3.73s. Gonna open it up in the next few days, so I'll take a look.

using the gear calculator at grimmjeeper:
http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Overdrive rpms:
current
3.73: 65mph = 1629rpm | 75mph = 1880rpm

proposed:
4.56: 65mph = 1992rpm | 75mph = 2298rpm | 18% higher rpm
4.88: 65mph = 2132rpm | 75mph = 2460rpm | 23.5% higher rpm

I'm running 5.13's with 37" tires on my rig. With the overdrive, it still cruises great at 75mph. And on the trails 5.13's are awesome. The only down side is when I mash the throttle from take off. It revs too quick almost hitting the rev limiter, making the transition from first to second an odd shift. I'm sure there is some programming I could do, but with 4.88's and 37's know I wouldn't have that issue. Or in your case 4.56's and 35's.

seems not too bad? how long in overdrive would you be? i took my truck (non OD) up the highway and my truck was bout what that calculator said...
3k @ 70mph.... hah... for 50 of my 65 mile commute...

that calculator is fricken awesome
