72 k5, sons first truck build.(officially NOT mine now..)

mine is:whistle:. I couldnt get it down all the way so I used the "bolt in the tube and hit it with a hammer" trick

Well I got the dipstick tube out, amazingly it was the regular twisted easy out that saved the day. The ignition wiring is done, radiator is in, most fluids are in (found out that I have a hole to plug in the block), knew it was there but forgot till antifreeze came out:rolleyes:. I picked up the battery, got the oil system primed, Got the rams horns on, and got the temp/oil gauges hooked up.

Still have to make some short drops for the exhaust to get it away from the fuel and tranny lines. Top off fluids when it starts running/pumping stuff through the system, Hook up tach, put dash cluster back in, buy radiator cap:doah:, and double check everything.

With any luck the exhaust drops wont take long to do and I can get it started monday afternoon. My neighbors are gonna hate us:haha:. Twin 18" 2.5" open pipes running in a 12x26 garage(BASS TUBE:rolleyes:) at 2000 rpm for a half hr. Glad we have earplugs:thumb: Picks to come

I got it pretty much ready to go. But I cant get the pipes done:dunno: Hole sawing isnt working and the jig saw is WAY slow. But when them are done its hit key and go. I gotta get some fresh gas in it too. 2 year old 89 with no stabil might not work well:doah:

good thought on the gas Rick...any noise yet?

I turned over the motor today to get gas pumping. I needed to check if gas would come out of the little fitting on the pump(no one could really say what it was for) . it did:rolleyes:. Glad the 6AL fuse was out. It would have ignited a LOT of gas under the hood when fire shot out of the manifold:eek1: All fixed up now. heres the pipes I'm working on. Their all thats stopping start up. I'll finish cutting them out and welding them tomorrow. I'm aiming for a saturday start up:waytogo:. I hope it all goes well.

IT WONT FRICKIN START:confused:

I decided to try to do it tonight. it is popping out the carb AND the pipes. i know it was at TDC when I set the dizzy cause I used a compression tester to find the right stroke. I've tried retarding it and advanceing it with no better results. Retarding it just made it spit out the carb. advancing it at least got it to pop and spit out each end. :dunno::dunno::dunno:

Rick can you pull the valve covers easily?....that is the easiest way for me to confirm what is going on with the valves. This is a crate motor right? Just roll it over (clockwise from the front) so the intake valve on #1 has been closed for at least 90* of crankshaft rotation, and the exhaust is closed also. When doing this the valves on #6 should be rocking to close the exhaust and opening the intake for that cyl.
Get #1 to TDC or even 10* BTDC if you can, then set the cap and rotor to fire at that point.

That was how I set it up. I used the comp tester to find the comp stroke. then put a wire in the cylinder and spun it till it stopped coming up. Then I found were the rotor was pointing and that became #1 on the cap. Done it 6 dozen times that way and never had an issue. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the MSD setup?

I dont' have any MSD experience....sorry!

I'm thinkin about unhooking it. Dont know what else to try. I guess I'll have to triple check the TDC again if that dont work.

If I put a timing light on it will that at least show me when its firing even at that low of rpm:dunno:

I would think if your getting spark through the wire the timing light should flash.

I got it running, a few wires were on the cap wrong:doah: Dont know when or how that happened:dunno: It ran at 2000rpm for 1/2 an hr. it was at 195* when I shut it off. Went to 230* immediately.... Is that normal. I hope I did it all right.

I have to set timing and hook up the vaccum booster. Recheck all fluids. Change oil/filter.

then its test drive time:D:D:D. Is it cool to reinstall the ceramic headers now that the cam breakin is done:dunno:

Rick I would check the plugs to see how they look, just to make sure the mixture is good, and also set your idle mixture...get those and the ignition timing right before removing the manifolds...
the temp climb is just engine heat making it rise because it isn't being cooled...is your temp sender in the head?

How did the dipstick repair go?

dip stick repair sucked but went well.

I have no idea how to read plugs.

And in no way am "I" touching mixture screws:rolleyes: I have never been able to do more than F em up. The holley street avenger says its set right out of the box, I was hoping that that was correct.

I was going to take it to the local race shop to set it all and finish the exhaust from the headers back.

I'll take a chance with the headers after I drive it around a little while:dunno: I love the fact that it runs:D my kids pretty stoked too. I cant frickin wait to drive it. Tommorow cant come fast enough.

It will probably be ok Rick, just don't want it running overly rich or lean...that may blue or yellow the header finish.
Good luck man!

gratz man! be sure to post up the kiddo with the shiit-eating grin when he gets to drive it the first time. :pimp:

I feel ya brother! :doah:

kid and his girl stole the camera:rolleyes: I have no idea where it is. And he wasnt home when I got it running. So he missed that part. once it actually started I just let er go. I'll be sure to have the cam when we drive it on the road though:waytogo: and when it pulls out of the garage
