'81 K5, "BlaZeus"- How to NOT build the ultimate budget K5; 3 & 4 link build

Yep elec choke. Usually they will kick down if you blip the throttle.

If I remember correctly they are adjustable. I think I used to dial mine way down too. Made it idle rougher in the winter on initial startup but I lived with it.

That's what I thought too...and it used to when I would do that right away, but now it usually will but not until long after it is warmed up

Easy to turn it down some, Or just unplug it after a few mins of running. Moab isn't that cold to really need it.

It will be worth it in the long run. I did the same thing last year. I ran my truck for a first time a week before the bash and first drove it in moab the day before the bash.

Wheeled all weekend only had one problem.... battery cable wasn't tight and would surge coming off the trail only.

Why isn't my engine slowing down when I hit the throttle after starting it up??? Seems like it gets faster and I have to shut it down or else it seems like it's about to blow.

Might have something to do with distributor timing and/or vacuum advance.

I ended up just playing with the idle screw and spraying down the linkages. Idles reasonably now. Still haven't been able to get the brakes working. Gonna have a friend come over today and help me out with it.

Also make sure your choke linkage isn't hanging up. I've had air cleaner housings mess with linkage on the choke butterfly.

I remember the days when I had this kind of drive!!!! Back when my hours were 4am to 8:30pm I decided to go to the garage for "a little bit" after work one night. After a couple things fell into place I decided to keep going for "a little bit longer" after knocking some stuff out I heard birds chirping... I had enough time to wash my hands and grab my lunch and fly to work! I knew it was getting late but I thought it was maybe midnight. Good job man! Hope it all goes well for you!

I just want to say that BlaZeus did make it to Blazer Bash but he had some overheating issues. We figured out a clamp on the lower radiator hose was loose. Once that was situated a few of the guys donated BlaZeus some coolant to fill the system, which is the great thing about wheeling at Blazer Bash.

The other really cool thing is that BlaZeus tracked me down and gave me new bottles of coolant to give back to those guys that gave him theirs on the trail. That is something that doesn't happen very often and I thought it was a really great gesture so I wanted to share with those following the thread.

Good luck with continuing the build BlaZeus and I hope your trip to Blazer Bash goes smoother next year.

Front clip almost done.

I hope all went well on your trip home from Moab. I tried to find you after we finished the trail on Saturday but couldn't find you in any of the camp grounds. I hope you were able to play a little more before you had to go home.

If you need any help getting things worked out feel free to PM me.

Chad.

Thank you for the kind words and all the help and encouragement! I am grateful to be able to have participated in BB16. Thanks for all the hard work that you and others put in to make it all happen!

Chad! Haha I was asking around to see if anyone knew your username and no one did so I wasn't sure if I was ever going to be able to personally thank you for everything! You were seriously a Godsend bro. You are the man! I can't thank you enough for all the help and support you provided.
We were in a cottage in Moab Rim. Where were you camped at? We ended up getting some stuff at the parts store and making it back to camp fine. Once we got back we all took long naps, and decided to just chill out for the rest of the day and then headed home on Sunday morning cuz we all had work on Monday. It was bad planning on my part and next year I will make sure to take off Monday and so we can have a full weekend of wheelin.
P.S. I am in love with your truck. It is sooooo pretty
