Poly mounts do let the drivetrain move around a lot more. You can feel it. It looks like the case broke at the only possible place it's thin enough to crack.

Now you can take the guts and get one of those super 205 cases with double low range. I can't remember the name of them right now but they're awesome.

Did you check to see if your motor mounts are broken too?

Lomax?

Lots of ideas being thrown around since I need a better low range and ultimately I don't want a th350. In the meantime I'll probably address the issue at hand, install the twin stick and enjoy the truck for the summer as is.

Motor mounts look good, that was the first thing I looked at after finding the broken adapter.

Interesting about the poly mounts because I haven't felt the motor move around however with the rubber I would. Then again the rubber motor mounts were pretty worn.

It might just be my setup but I can definitely feel the drivetrain jump if I get on and off the gas real quick. I never felt that with the rubber mounts.

What trans are you wanting to run? If you stick with an auto, I would recommend the TH400. I swapped to that from a TH700R4 three years ago and I don't think I'd ever want another automatic except the 400.

Yeah the Lomax. That's what you need!

Yep, I'll be going with a th400.

If I add the DIY4x mounts I think I'll add some stability to the engine/trans/t-case. Should have done that in the first place.

Lomax is stupid expensive for what you get. Traditional 203/205 is going to be the cheapest option and best bang for the buck. If you have a little more money to spend I would get one of ORD's magnum box underdrive units which I believe uses the gear set from a np241 so you get 4 speeds 1:1, 2:1, 2.72:1, and 5.33:1 when combined with your stock 205. It's a pretty compact unit but does add a little more length to your drivetrain. Around $2,000 which is $800 less than a lomax 205.

Or, just found a cheaper option from NWF. They have several different underdrives available all for less than $2,000. One is a build it yourself kit for $730 and you provide your own np241 guts.

I was looking at the NWF DIY unit a while back when they posted it up on pirate, pretty cool.

Lots of options.....

I run the DIY engine mounts and stock tranny mount. I assume it flexes more and soaks up vibrations better than the poly mounts. I also carried an extra Anchor rubber tranny mount while on the trail. Haven't had a problem in 4k miles. :D

Lomax is too much money to get just a touch more gear reduction than a stock NP241.

I believe advance adapters makes a beefy version of that adapter. But then, you could be looking at breaking the Transmission case.

I assume you kept the support rod that goes between the engine block and trans case. If you leave it off or it gets loose, that can cause damage. I'm sure you knew that already though.

Good to know.

That was my understanding as well. I'll likely go with 203/205 setup with a th400.

They make a replacement, doesn't mention anything about being stronger.

I don't have one right now but it's been on my pick n pull list.

Dang buddy you got to have that. It's a must-have. I think I may have one lying around I can send you. I'll check this afternoon. I'm sure the torque from the engine coupled with the low range usage on the rocks could have caused the drivetrain to twist enough to break the case.

:doah:

Wouldn't that cause the adapter to break elsewhere? From what I can see only the feet are broken off the adapter. Without the brace I would think that stress would break the adapter between the trans and t-case?

If you have one laying around I'm interested, otherwise I'm sure I can find one on ebay.

I'm gonna be honest here, I have never had one on my truck. I wheel pretty hard on mine, and I've never had any issues. Is it really that big of a deal?

I don't know if it is a big deal or if it even caused this breakage. I just think the case broke at it's smallest (weakest) point, which happened to be up above the mount, which was attached to the immovable crossmember. Seems to me like any kind of excessive movement front to back or side to side (as in twisting force even) would put lots of stress on that exact area.

I'll look in my junk pile this afternoon and send you a P.M. if I locate one.

It definitely broke at it's weakest point, likely from the drivetrain moving front to back so the trans mount was rocking forward and back causing it to snap. The theory sounds good on paper at least.....

Thank You :D

Just off looks, it looks thicker in that area.

I don't know if it's any thicker or not, especially for what it would cost. I doubt you would have any luck trying to weld that cast steel either. It would probably break again in the same spot. I may be able to rustle up one of those adapters too. I know I have a short one that will work for your TH350 as long as it only has four bolts holding the adapter to the trans. But it's for the later, taller crossmember, so it won't work with your flat one.

They made the short adapter for the 205? I thought those were the 208 or 241 adapters. Mine is the 4 bolt th350/700 style with the figure 8 at the t-case. Sellers on ebay are asking 175+ used adapters :doah:

Oh yours is the figure 8. Well then I probably don't have one of those. I was thinking yours would be the round pattern for some reason. Oh well. $175? :eek1:
