'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Camper day! @Capt Ron posted up about the latest camper find over in the photo a day thread. Our fellow desert rat buddy Ian had made the call for us to find a camper for him after last year's trip. Ron and I have both been looking. We've had a close miss on one, the rest seemed to be priced to the level of insane or too far away to make it work. Last week Ron found a gem. The ad was on Craigslist and lacked pics. It worked to our advantage as most skipped right past it. But Ron worked the phone and finally got through. He made the deal and paid the guy for the camper. Ron would bring it down to his shop and we'd swap Ian's top and gate to the Blazer and he would take it back to the guy. That was the plan at least. Having a couple of days pass since the deal was done the seller started getting cold feet, even after money had been exchanged earlier and bill of sale in hand. Near as we can tell, the ad was still up and the seller had the realization he could get more than the agreed price. Ron and his son had that covered with a quick phone call to the lawyer for the company he works for. With the seller's attitude reset, Ron's son expressed interest in the Blazer and paid the difference to the asking price. Title in hand they hooked it to his tow truck and hauled ass out of there.

Ron brought it to his shop at work and got the camper ready for removal. Ian and I boogied up in the CUCV this morning. First thing after checking out the camper was to get the topper off of Ian's truck. Sharp eyes may pick up on the white top vs the camo'd top he had on there. Larry had the white top laying in wait for his Blazer project and it was thought better fitting on the other K5 since he was going to paint it black for his anyway.

Onward to the extraction. As one could guess this is the sketchiest part of the operation. When the Blazers are of such different heights we have to prep for the tallest one. We have to get the side rails of the camper 60" off the ground to clear the truck as Ian backs it in. Which means we have to take a few tries getting the balance right or else the whole thing is going to come crashing to the ground.

Much like pulling an engine finds the tensile strength test of any wire you forgot to remove, pulling this monster had some things hanging on. Rubber weatherstrip upfront and outback and creative use of expandible spray foam between the back wall and tailgate jamb. Oh, and a CB antenna cable run into the camper from the cab.

No pics were taken with the camper free standing as we all had our hands full at that point.

Hard part done, now comes the fun to get the camper actually bolted down. After a little pushing and shoving we got it lined up enough to lock it down with a nice mismatch of bolts all over. They did at least have 3 bolts going forward into the back of the cab unlike mine having none.

Looking good!

We got Ian's top and gate swapped onto Ron's son's new to him Blazer. Being the option nerd I am I usually peek into the glove box to take a look at the SPID label. What to I discover? Oh yeah, seems like GM didn't want us putting campers on Blazers back in the day. I'm pretty sure that's GM legal's dose of CYA to save us from ourselves. Plus, as Larry said it's not really a slide-in camper anyway, it bolts on.

All in all it went pretty smooth. Ron proved yet again he kicks ass. Ian is super happy and thankful for Ron's effort. The 8.1 didn't know or care if the camper was on there. We just motored down the road just like we drove up.

Not much happening lately with the weather. The last good weekend of weather we had 3 weeks ago I swapped out the idle air control motor due to the inconsistent idle. It was getting to be very annoying. Push in the clutch to coast down to a light and one time it's idling at 1500 rpm, next time 2500, time after that back to 800 rpm. It was all over the map. Watching throttle position data with Torque showed it was not a stuck throttle. Plus stomping on the pedal in an effort to un-stick it made no difference.

The IAC was sticking and to add to the problem the o-ring was torn. As soon as I fired it off it ran as it should. My son was down for that weekend so we took it out for a spin and it didn't act up anymore. The next time I drove it was on a rescue mission when my son's S10 blew a tire on his way down from Denver. He was a couple of miles out of Colorado Springs on Hwy 83. It was during some heavy snow here at home and it was heading north towards him. The 8.1 purred right along. After delivering a spare and helping him throw it on (his got stolen from under his truck) we drove back together with a detour to the new In-n-out burger in Springs.

The weather killed any idea of doing anything to the truck the last couple of weekends. I got some little stuff inside the cab that I've been putting off today after work. Plan for tomorrow is to pull the driver-side exhaust manifold to fix the leaky gasket.

Once that's done, it's just load and go to Denver after work on Friday. Saturday should be fun in the snow.

Totally unrelated to truck stuff, was the wait at In-N-Out bad? Been waiting for the newness to wear off before trying to go.

I think it's been open a month or more. We hit the drive-thru at 10:00 and pulled out with food by 10:30. I will say this, once we put in the order we were gone in 5 minutes.

We had to run the monkey up to Children’s last Friday during a snowstorm for an annual appointment and hit In and Out on the way home. The line was pretty long considering the weather but moved very quickly. By the time we were done eating in the parking lot the line was at least 30 cars long by then. They know how to move burgers though but its no wonder 80 of their employees got the Rona a while back when you see how the workers are crawling over each other like rats in there :haha:

Now we just need a Whataburger to appease our over abundance of Texas transplants now too

Burger discussion aside, the gasket change out is complete. That isn't something I want to repeat again. Why I got Mr. Gasket paper-style gaskets in the first place escapes me, but I won't make that mistake twice. Fel-pro went back in.

The only casualty was one of my Taylor 10.5mm plug wires. I'm pretty sure my neighbors knew when the plug boot came off with the clip end still on the plug. Need to look if I can get one or if I have to pony up for another set.

Larry had a couple of extra stock wires over at his place I went and picked up. I got it running and took it for little drive to get everything up to temp and came back to retorque the nuts one more time. No more leak. Thank goodness as it was starting to drive me nuts.

If you need plug wire parts I might be able to connect you with someone. Silicone Wire Systems has been making custom wires for pretty much anything my dad or I have driven for the last 40 or so years. He use Taylor wires and we use him because he has the sets for Corvairs, but my dad has had him make sets for his 1/2 stroked 440 chrysler, i've done wires for my 914, I think he would be happy selling boots, clips, or whatever you need. Just tell him Derrick dbcorvairracer sent you (he has known me since my dad used to take me to Corvair club meetings in my car seat, that was 40 years ago)

I appreciate the offer. I emailed Taylor tonight to see if they have an option to buy a single wire or a new end. If Taylor don't pan out I'll hit that guy up.

Plug wire update. I emailed Taylor to see about a replacement single wire. After a couple of emails exchanged I was advised they weren't building singles for the 8.1 version, but the LS truck 10.4 mm wires were the same except for the non-oem style plug boot on it. He advised I could buy it cheaper on Summit or Jegs than through them directly. Not quite what I wanted to hear, but maybe the only option short of buying another complete plug wire set. Funny thing is both Summit and Jegs say the part would ship directly from the manufacturer, but the eta to ship would be first week of April. Ugh.

I've got an email into Summit to see how they might handle the situation. Awaiting a response.

HA! That’s probably on me :haha: I used to use header gaskets with manifolds all the time in the old days to help them from leaking before we had someone that could plane manifolds. Since I didn’t have an exhaust manifold gasket listed for the K10 I assumed I used header gaskets like usual. Apparently not on an 8.1 :dunno:
Ah, well…it was a good character builder for you to wrestle the manys off and on :haha:. That truck kicked me in the sack daily for two months straight....your turn!
