'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Got of work and stopped by Larry's place to borrow his transmission jack. Got over to Bill's shop and we got to work. Bill got going under and I started up top.

T-case came out first. Then came the trans. Topside the radiator and shroud are out. Fluids drained. Exhaust is disconnected.

Really down to the fuel lines, electrical and other loose ends.

Damn dude, you're not screwing around!
I'll admit removal is a tad bit easier than installation. The engine is a little more tedious with the wiring, but Bill already has the engine mount bolts out. It's just sitting waiting for the sky hook. Heading over shortly. I do need to snag some donuts for my help on the way.

The biggest thing I didn't like about that combination is how got damn close the LS engine hugged the firewall. Made for getting to the back side a sumbish. Might want to let the purchaser know he might consider moving it forward at least an inch since he probably has to build driveline and exhaust anyway. The 8.1 is like any other ole GM V8 where it has a fat lip behind the heads that push it the engine away to a normal position.

Thanks for the tip and yes, it will be getting new exhaust and drivelines built.

I’ll second that. When I put the L83 in desertk5’s
Rig, I moved the engine forward 2”. So much easier to work on, especially with the direct injection stuff on the rear.

Had the engine out and the truck on the trailer by 12:30 today. The truck is back home at my house and the bay is clean where we made the mess at Bill's place.

The engine control harness came off of the engine easy but I still need to remove the ecm and the harness from the truck.

I'd agree that pushing the engine forward is a wise idea. That deep setback was cause for the fan being a little too far back to the 6.2 fan shroud. I kept the placement though as it kept the trans in the stock location so the front driveline didn't have to change. But if the drivelines need to get changed out moving the drivetrain forward is an easy thing to do with the slider mounts.

Hey Rob, since this may be sorta fresh in your mind, if the engine slides forward some, how much can it go before the right exhaust manifold gets close to the frame? Or it that not a concern? I don't remember what manifolds those are.

That's a good point to bring up. Those are 6.0L truck manifolds. There's probably 3/4" to 1" before they hit. That might be the max you can move it forward with these manifolds. But that will get it off of the pinch weld at the firewall for sure.

is Larry parting out the sub?
Nope. I have my own 8.1 sitting over at his place. The NV4500 is sitting in my garage. The polar bear burb is not going anywhere as it's currently the only squarebody he can drive.

What happened to Larry's truck? I seen the picture of it on a trailer. But I haven't gathered what happened. Or do I need to wait for that part in the trip report?

He broke it. But that will be in the report. Cliff notes version is it cracked the frame at the most uncommon spot on both sides.
