'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Hey Rob, in post # 945 you show what looks like the roof laying on the ground. What holds the skirt to the roof /main body of the camper.

Got a lot roughed in today. Looking at the calendar I've come to the realization, that I've got to stick to items needed to run vs restoration. So I decided I'm going to move on without redoing the headliner. I'll fix where it's loose and save the replacement for later. So that means the lights need to go in now. I finished connecting the circuits to the roof and removed the old incandescent fixtures.

I had already installed the outside light on a previous weekend. It's really just one wire to hook up as the ground is tied right to the aluminum frame. I did add a jumper wire from the frame back to my ground junction block in the electrical hub back up front. But the light is crazy bright. Gotta love LED's

I wired in a main switch for the rear light (the light has one on the housing too) and installed it to the panel that covers the furnace. This way it's an easy reach with the door open.

While I was at it, I decided to add another light that can be used while cooking or working at the rear of the truck. I had an extra GM trouble light laying in the garage so I put it to use. I need to get an LED bulb for it and the one up front.

Climbing up into the catbird seat for the first time I looked back at the mess I've made with the lights on.

There's plenty of room up there as I can lay out and not touch at my feet or head. Needs more headroom through, I can't sit up. That space will close up when I put the mattress back up there. All the more reason to add height when I re-do the side liner later.

I added an 110v AC outlet too. This is just merely nothing more than a short extension cord that hooks up to the plug on the outside. I did use a GFCI outlet for circuit protection. This will only get used to run my CPAP or power my laptop if I have access to Shore power at organized campsites. I do need to shave about 1/4" off of the trim plate to allow it to fit.

I still have two 60" LED light strips to install (truck bed light kit), plus multiple 12v and USB charge ports. Once the rest of the items are installed and wiring routed I'll loom the wiring and tie it down nice and tidy.

Actually, that's just an optical illusion. The top was never removed. In the pic with the vent removed you can just see the ground due to the angle of the shot. But to answer your question, the skirt merely stapled to the camper body and the roof. An added trim piece is screwed around the perimeter. One thing to note the gap that is there between that trim and the roof HAS to be sealed. Otherwise it's a direct path for water to run down the inside of the side liner. I realized this when I popped the top up Saturday by finding some water on the cab over floor. Not alot, but I don't want any getting in. We had recovered the roof, but there were some gaps in the flex seal right at that trim. So yesterday and today I pumped the seam with clear silicone caulking around the entire perimeter. It rained down here last night so I checked it this morning and so far so good. It was dry.

Excellent progress! This camper rebuild has been very fun to watch
Thanks! It's been pretty fun to work on. I've got more stuff to do before we go, but I'm taking it one bite at a time.

I've got some cleanup to do. The College Larry and I both graduated from is having a car show and Alumni event this Saturday. Larry's taking the Burb and I'm taking my ride, as a work in progress. But the last couple of weekends worth of work and getting the camper installed has stuff everywhere. It's good to cleanup the mess and reset for the next stages anyway. It's clean on the inside now. I even wiped out the last of the Utah red dirt that was evenly coated throughout the back of the truck too. Ran out of light so I had to flip the camper lights on. First time I've had them on when it's dark out. I'm pretty sure I've got enough light for right now.

Got the outside and the engine bay to do tomorrow night.

That's looking good. That one think that makes camping easier, is having plenty of light.
I still have some to put in too! I picked up a bed light kit to add a strip of LED's to the bottom of the cabinet to illuminate the footwell and the other strip will go above the passenger side on the underside of the cabinet there. It's color changing too, so I can switch to red and not mess with night vision if one has to get up and drain some beverages from earlier without turning on the bright lights and waking up the wife.

That’s a great idea honestly. Kinda works like the soft yellow light that was on the back of ours. It didn’t attract all the bugs too.

Had a good day goofing off at the car show up at CSU-Pueblo. A little backstory here, Larry and I both graduated from this school. Back then it was known as the University of Southern Colorado. We both picked up a degree in Automotive Parts and Service Management. The program we went through is still going and gaining some strength with one of the guys we went to school with now being back as an instructor. One of our professors we had back then passed away almost 10 years ago and the program started having this show as a memorial to him. Neither Larry or I are regulars at the parking lot show scene, but this one is near and dear to our hearts. So without any more delay, here's some pics.

Not very often Tesla's or an Infinity on bags parks near my stuff..

Quite the mix. The dude with the Audi left his car running most of the day so his lights would stay on and he could raise and lower the car at will. Thought it was odd for sure.

No surprise here, some dude with an 8.1L 5 speed won the 4x4/truck class. I'm pretty sure I saw him handing out dollar bills to anybody walking by with a people choice ballot.

Here's a shot into the shop we worked out of back in the day. Glad to see the kids keeping the spirit alive with a crusty Scout in the shop. Back when Larry and I went there the Automotive Club we belonged too would organize off-road trips into the local mountains and would hit Moab too. The new instructor that we went to school with is bringing that back. He took a group out to Moab last month. They got snowed on, but loved it and are making plans to go again. I got my first off-road miles with these guys back then, before I even had a 4wd truck. So it's good to see these kids see the same way.

He didn't bring the K10? Seems like that would stand out more than the polar bear.

Plus, you guys would have been a matching pair. :wink1:

Shoot outside of the camper, the K5 and Burb are very similar in their own right. Plus Larry brought his daughter with him and the car seat was already mounted in the Burb. The other issue was that the K10 is about to get its round of pre-desert trip repairs/upgrade work done.
