'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Ok, the overlandy stuff is over. Onto some action. Part 1 of Hell's Revenge is up on YouTube. This is from the start to Hell's gate with some of the action of the brave group that took the v-notch on. Bear with my music choices. Non-copyrighted music a challenge to find solid stuff.

Very cool, next year we need to get you a google street view camera. How cool would that be.
A gopro fusion camera does take 360* immersive video so it could take some crazy footage. I got a big block to swap in so that one might be on the back burner for a while!

It wasnt until the next climb where I realized the front output was in neutral.
I'm not going to lie, seeing you struggle on that gave me some serious second thoughts about my ability to get up that. I wasn't going to follow your line, but knowing you were locked up and had a hard time I wasn't sure how we were going to do on the easy line. I didn't know until we stopped further down that your front output was in neutral.

True on both counts!

Need to put my hands on a stock replacement shaft though. Couple of wheeling buddies want to do a fall color run to the great sand dunes the weekend after next. 90% of that trail could be done in 2wd except the Sandy bits with my heavy truck.

Well, when I break stuff I do it in the best ways possible. Figuring I ought to get off my rump and pull the broken axle apart since I've got plans to wheeling again in a couple of weeks, I pulled the right side of the axle apart tonight. As expected the shafts are tent stakes now, but what I also found was the upper ball joint is now loose. That joint was fairly fresh but with two shafts and a joint fighting to come out at the same time the bottom side of the upper joint took some hits. The grease zerk got pruned and took some damage. I noticed there is a gap to the nut on the top side and the inner "c".

Here's the bottom side.

The nut and shaft on the lower ball joint to a lesser hit but still feel tight. I'll just replace them both while I got it apart.

The shafts really did a good job of removing the ends of the yokes quite well. The stub axle will be used on the next swing out carrier project since the yoke end gets cut off.

I've got a new tech at work that is into all things off road and he thinks he has some gm 44 shafts in his shop so I'll take this one to match up with this one.

Zoo is running a D44 up front. I think he means matchup to entail not getting a 10b shaft out of the (s)crap pile
Bent is on track with my disjointed thought process. My tech is a jeep guy mainly but has built some lightweight buggies with the full size d44 axle in the past. So I made the distinction to say gm 44 as in the same axle I have, not a 10bolt.

Must have been a little loopy last night.

Nothing worse than swapping in a 10bolt shaft into a D44. Ruined an entire wheeling trip with that mistake.

My local boneyard tried to pull that on me. I described what I needed in detail. Said they had it and sent it over. Quick count of the splines on the inner shaft and yep, 28 not 30. It's pretty bad when yard guys and counter guys at a junkyard can't tell a 10 bolt from a 44. Gone are the days where they were walking talking Hollander interchange manuals.

Sad part was I've been in the yard and could have swore there was at least one '75 and another '76 back there.

Oooooooooh. I didn't grasp that point.

Carry on.

And carry extra shafts, since this is getting to be a regular maintenance item. ;)
Kids these days and their backward retro fits...

@ZooMad75
How are the steering stops on that axle? We already established it broke backing up, was curious if it over extended or if you’re just mean to your truck
