'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.

Intake, timing cover, oil pan cleaned up with a fresh coat of cast aluminum VHT paint.

Larry and I had already discussed the game plan for paint, but he threw in a wild card for some added contrast.

Those injectors are Nasty!
 
Anybody that was in the big block thread in the garage got a sneak peek at the 8.1 in color. That fat block sucked up 2 big cans of VHT paint to change the color back to it's roots. Larry said it came out duller than the 5.3 did so he ran to the zone and picked up another can of VHT clear to top coat it.

Came out pretty good though. Plus I still have some details to do to the valve covers that should look good.

We tossed around the idea of the cross over and pump going black but decided to paint them orange to let them blend in a little better.

The red fuel rail now in place against the orange kind of clashes, so it's going orange. It's coming together for sure.

Jmo but I would sand the valve cover ribs to be aluminum at least.

That's the plan and then a layer of clear to seal it in.

Had we kept the engine black the red rail wouldn't have been so bad. But we had to see it to make a call on it. So it's going orange, but cast aluminum isn't a bad idea I'll toss at him.

I stopped by Larry's place to drop off some oil and pick up the valve covers to detail. I think the feeling is coming back to my fingers now. If they were for a 454 I'd have been done in an hour. Not so much with these ones.

First I masked off the areas I didn't want to possibly sand the paint off of.

Then I got going with my palm sander and some 80 grit. I had to get creative to get into the tight areas for the coil mounts.

I cleaned up with some 220 grit to smooth it out and limit the coarse sanding marks. Some of the coil mounts got buzzed with the sander requiring some touch up.

All in all, they look good. Major pain in the ass, but it was worth it.

Another round of masking to touch up the coil mounts. I'll peel off the tape and throw a coat of clear on it tomorrow.

I really enjoy looking at the details you guys do on the engine swaps.

Looks tits!

Now after saying that there sure it a lot of guys in here stepping up the game and doing fantastic jobs of cleaning up the engine bays and swapped in engines. I think watching what everyone else is doing on ck5 has really raised the bar! :waytogo:

Larry and I just like it clean and somewhat factory looking under the hood. Though the orange is going to make things a little more flashy than either of Larry's trucks.

There is a method behind the madness too. When everything starts out clean under the hood, it's easy to keep it clean. Everything getting a fresh coat of paint any fresh dirt rinses right off without too much effort. Leaks get noticed sooner so they don't turn into bigger messes. I can just run to the car wash, hose it down and 90% of the dirt is off. Hitting it with any cleaning product takes it further.

Plus working on it later you don't end up looking like a total grease ball when you get done.

There are items that need touched up like the inner fender panels that will probably need help. With it all apart it will be easy to address.

It's also part of the reason why we aren't in a major rush. If I needed it right now we could have just stuffed it in as is and it would have been fine. But I've got time and it's not my primary ride so why not take the time to clean and paint now. It's much easier to do out of the truck vs in it.

I don't get critical on those that don't go though this madness. There may be reasons I don't know why they didn't and that's ok. But having gone through it I can appreciate the folks that do spend the time on making it nice.

The important thing is keeping these trucks on the road and exploring. Clean or dirty.
