PLAN B

This build was 2 parts 1 i have a truck I made to pretty to wheel so I'm building an ugly one I can actually enjoy. And 2. My cousin has been trying to join us for blazer bash but his truck wont be ready so we are surprising him with this one
I've been running Delphi pumps in the crew cab. Installed in 2013 and haven't had a problem.

BTW, something is wrong if you have put 4 fuel pumps in, is there no baffle or EFI sump in there? Or were they cheap pumps? If its not one of those two I would be trying to find out why still.

Well this is a new one.... Apparently I managed to crush my sending unit inside my gas tank... This is extra odd because the tank doesn't have a scratch on it.... I pulled the sending unit today because I though the sender was bad I guess technically it is ;).
Looks like I need to reinforce the factory skid plate.

I have another scenario.
Is it possible the last time you put in a cheap one in a hurry and it caught on the baffling and got bent?

Nope. I tried to straighten this and I could hardly bend it by hand and these drop down/fall into place really easy and the top of the sender sits flat with the top of the tank. If I had to push or force it down I absolutely would have stopped and rotated. The fuel gauge was reading perfectly before my wheeling trip but after it was doing weird things like reading 100% full then suddenly 100% empty and the pump got really loud (this is why I pulled it).

I have a theory... The factory skid plate kind of sucks on these... (look back a page or two at the tank I absolutely smashed with the skid plate on there) I think I hit it dead center and it flexed everything up 4-6 inches and the tank and skid popped back down. Since my skid plate is covered in a tar like undercoating I'm not seeing anything really obvious.

So now you are saying there's evidence of the tank being smashed.
I thought I read there was no evidence showing on the tank, only the skid.

I can imagine a scenario where the center of the tank was pushed in and the pressure in the tank popped it back out. Just the other day I took the cap off the tank in the crew cab and there was a lot of pressure.

You should check the baffle tray to see if it's still in tact. The trays in my old saddle tanks were all busted up from the bottom of the getting pushed up. They're just plastic.

I have the factory skid plate on there. If I look between the skid and the tank there is the the 1" gap like normal and I can't see any dents on the tank at all. The skid plate also appears to be straight. What I was saying was with the factory skid plate I completely smashed my OLD gas tank and the skid plate maintained its shape. Here are some pictures I just took.

Also attached are pictures of my old tank that got smashed with the same factory skid plate installed and pictures of this new tank that was installed right before my last moab trip.

@mrk5 I think you are right on the money. I think with the weight of the fuel and it being pressurized just enough it popped back into shape

Yeah I am familiar with the skid plate, I had mine modified with bracing, otherwise it is just that, a skid plate, not a shield, no protection against an impact.
