Project 82 TCBF -10.13.9 - progress!!!

you can say that again :p: Looks real good!
Thanks bud :wink1:

so what did you decide on for the bed?
Yeah, pretty much. It will end up something like this:

Wow that should be interesting, how are you planning on shrinking a full size down to the size of that Toy?

Looking really good, keep the work going and the updates coming.

I`m also filming a moving, "Honey I shrunk the rig!"

Hahhaha, thanks man, it`s getting there...

I always regretted trying to duplicate that bed on my old toy. Remember measure 65 times cut once.
Yeah, I`m sure that will be the case. Doesn`t look like it will be too too bad, but it will be my first hand at fab work...

not to rain on your parade but arn't you painting the rig red? You're gonna wanna paint the jams on those fenders red before you bolt it all together. When the truck gets sprayed you'll see the black down in the gaps and it just wont look right.

Are you really going to notice it that much? I thought about it, but because I need the rig done, I figured just paint the inners black, as opposed to leaving them the charcoal color.

Anyone else think the same thing? If I really need to, I suppose I could pull them off, just didn`t want to after the work we put into lining it all up. The doors still need to be painted as well....

I painted the door jambs on my truck black and the fenders are OD, eventually the rest of the truck will be OD. I don't think you will notice. If anything it will just seem like a shadow

Ben,

You can use a couple of the same tricks I've seen on Overhaulin' or MuscleCar before disassembly.

#1 - drill a small 1/8" (or less) pilot hole through the hinge areas top and bottom to create and "index hole". Instead of struggling for hours, simply use a small nail to line up your index holes and the door will be EXACTLY where it was before you removed it.

#2 - Make careful notes about how many washers, shims, etc are at each location so that you can put the same amount back afterwards. I always thought it would be even easier to spot weld them directly to the back of the fender (or wherever) so that they wouldn't get lost or shift around. You can get them painted that way too.

These type of details all come down to the "Might As Well" syndrome... your truck is looking really good so far, and it's got to be really tempting to not let anything slow you down at this point. Maybe having black door jambs won't bother you later on.....but then again, when everything else looks great it might be the kind of thing that you kick yourself about. Only you can decide how important it is and whether it's worth the extra time to say "Might As Well" on this one. :dunno:

yup, bodyshop 101, trim out all panels before install....

Yeah, I guess I should have thought more about it. Because the doors are also another color, I don`t notice it to much, but when they`re painted, that may be another story. Besides the jams infront of the doors, what else is going to be noticeable? I have a pretty close match I used to paint the diff cover, maybe I should just bomb it what that?

Will they be able to jam the doors with them installed?

I`m wondering if it will be cheaper for me to pull the panels, then have them sprayed, and re install them. Maybe it may end up cheaper?

I guess I`ll worry about it a little more when the time comes for paint....

its a lot more likely they will get scratched during assembly or transporting them, not the mention it is a pita to align panels and worry about the paint at the same time.

I would trimout the doors before dropping it off, this just looks must more finished once completed, also spots they dont hit wont look like crap. Trim them out and reinstall the panels.

yes they can hits the jams with the doors on, have the carpet out or peeled back to the seem, and they can tape off with plastic for the interior.

most places should do it for an extra hundred if you bug em and are nice. I would say you can get a lot for your money right now with the economy and some shops being slow. Shop the hell out of your paint job and be reasonable and upfront about your expectations on the agreed price. And look it over and make sure it meets that agreement before you take it home, be nice if you see something and offer to leave it for another day or two but dont take it home or pay!

it suck when you could spray bomb it and cheap out but even a cheap paint job will compliment all the effort you have done and you can be proud of it when your done

supersize, I completely disagree.

Ben,

The outcome of a paint job is a function of surface preparation and attention to detail. Your door jambs will not look great if you (or whoever paints it) don't spend the time to do it right.

That means removing all grease, grime, dirt, etc and sand the entire door jamb, hinge, etc. Then you must apply the paint in the proper ratio of paint/reducer/activator and spray it properly. That means holding the gun at a 90 degree angle to the part being painted and at the proper distance.

You can't get good access to the door jamb hinge area unless you remove the door, and you can't spray the paint properly if you can't access it.

Painting the jamb area without proper surface preparation will change the color, but it will flake off, as it won't adhere properly. Similarly, if you can't get access to spray it correctly, some areas will look fine, others very "dry" and look like overspray.

But this is your project and it's your desires that count.

I never said not to properly prep or clean the surface, I even recomended triming out the panels prior. The areas visible, door striker, around the weatherstripping, and hinges will all come out fine indeed and pose no problem for a qualified painter. I cant see a reason for someone to be judging the paint texture and quality on the very inside of the door hinges nor the bottom side of the door that you cant see with out being on your knees. The paint on the door hinges on my 07 and 08 are both a little flat and dull in this same area from the factory. This is a trail rig/driver/ street truck, not a rotisserie 100k hot rod.

My recommendation is based on the vast difference of quality he will see from the choice to have the whole truck painted verse spray painting the mismatched doors with a similar color.

Panel alignment with painted/finished panels can be hard enough to deal with cool headed and get it right you don't do it often or its your first time, I cant see it being worth the headache of a truck he was considering just spray painting. I think he should trim them out close, then take his time getting the panel alignment and gaps to his satisfaction.

well, got the headers in, and the march power steering and alternator brackets on, and some other misclaneous junk. Picked up the bulkhead fittings for my heater hoses, and some fittings for the tranny cooler lines...

here`s some pics

looks good Ben...

Did you go with the bulkhead fitting I had picked out? I'm actually gonna order mine in the next day or so, as I started smoothing the firewall and I'm at the point I need to fit that up...

Don`t quite remember the one(s) you picked out :doah:

I just got whatever my local speed shop had, Frogul brand I believe. I`ll get a pic in the morning :wink1:
