Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

2+ months of wedding expenses put a big halt in parts/toys buying... but I'm back at it now..

anxious to get back to some fab on the rig... gonna start playing with it tomorrow a bit and thru the week.. next weekend hopefully, I can make some progress on the drawers/doors...

California is the same thing.
You need a company name on the truck to have a light bar mounted on.
We used to run magnetic lights with magnetic name tag on the doors

just a brief tidbit of the road ahead.. the long process has begun... just need to plod thru each process as usual...

first hinge welded in.. need to shape it a bit, cut for latches, weld drawer mounts in, yada, etc.....

Ryoken - likey welding aluminum..... :weld:

it's like watching the final pieces of a puzzle being put into place. How did you get that piano hinge on?

that was the big hold up, I needed to get alum welding capability.. it's a solid alum piano hinge that I drilled holes in and plug welded to the alum panels..

I'll get into more detailed photos and such as I start actually mounting the drawers...

it's quite a few steps.... first I have to do the face panel/hinge/lower mount... done, other than the final burnishing..

than I need to make 2 more 1/4" spacers tomorrow for the back/sides of the drawers.... than I need to weld 6 of Kert's panel mount tabs to the tubes to bolt it all together... fit drawer, drill for bolts.. mount..

repeat 3 more times... :doah:

funny thing is.. every time I put another piece of the puzzle in, it exaggerates the next, needed puzzle pieces... these will really make the front corners look silly.. :doah: :haha:

but I probably wont actually install those till I pull the bed back off for the the tank install..

after the drawers, the doghouse for the tank will be next... I'm thinking of fully fabbing/welding that myself now... the outer weld seams will be rounded and burnished anyway on that......

hopefully I'll have both ds doors kinda on the way to being done tomorrow...

thanks... :D pretty wasn't the build thought, but I'll take it! :woot: :haha:

it kinda freaks me out how much attention the rig get's... I built it for me, not for the masses, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised now realizing how "not the norm homometal, new 60 g Raptor-y" it is....... the build was more a "f*ck u to that whole mentality"....

my homebrew trans spacers helped my drive angles out a bit, smoothed Mutt out for the most part... it'll run 75 on the Parkway easy peezy...

eventually, I'm gonna do a single shaft, get rid of the carrier bearing and make sure my angles are playing nice... but I'm thinking I'll wait till I do the Cummins for that...

had a pretty serious offer to build something similar today.. friend of a customer with some coin that apparently isn't afraid of a 25, 30 g price tag, saw pics of it and freaked, "he needs to build me something!".. still not interested in doing it at this time, but we'll see... it is flattering tho...

oh... and what does everyone think of my latch choice? :ears:

I think the look is spot on IMO...

Would a highlift slide in front of the box in that space behind the cab?
Could make a "false" panel to pop open and slide out the jack.
Was wondering about the triangle empty space that'll be behind the rear box on either side.

:D

the intention at this point is to do a simple curved panel for the front, unlike the compound angle taillight panels in the rear...

don't forget, I intend to add lower boxes like here..

ds, for recovery storage stuff, ps side being a dual bat box...

a hi-lift jack has been a contemplation for mounting to the main angle down tube of the C-tube... hi-lift on one side.. swing out boom hoist on the other.

I'm already pretty sure I'm gonna run a pair of extinguishers on the vertical C-tubes down the cab lines...

the "V" area behind the flaps I'm thinking will be open... tho, the flat area above the tires, from the aforementioned hangin boxes, to the flaps, will get skinned in 1/8" to keep out road debri/sludge..

I think those latches loo on pretty good. Fits the truck well. Only thing is is that the front one looks crooked, could just be the angle of the picture too.

Looks great! You don't think you could get away with a single latch? Two latches and two locks seems like a PITA. But looks awesome.

I wasnt gonna say anything, uh because it's obvious that the front tire is low an 1/8 lb pressure. You focking dolts!!! Yeah low front tire pressure.....:D

As for the double lock, it's "fricken joisy" it'll give him enough time to undo all the locks he has to undo just to retreive his Louisville slugger permit to "use for other than baseball" and then unlock himself out of his own house.......
Hmmm maybe shoulda went with a three lock system.....

30k, I would build another in a heart beat, well I would just sell that one and buy another one with a 6bt already in it.

Unless you rate your time at half minimum wage, I donno that $30K is remotely enough. Your attention to detail would likely keep it from being profitable. Amazing, yes, but not profitable :D

Shoot the guy back a ridiculous price and timeline. 45k 8 month time frame. If he bring you a rust free truck. 10k up front. Then x amount every week then final payment. Truck not to be delivered until final payment. Also put in add on for changes. Extra parts. Etc. You never know.

I think I might hold off on the front corners till you get the bottom box. Everything is nicely integrated but those bottom boxes always look like add ons. Would be nice to do as much as possible to make them look integrated and that front corner will be key in that I think
