Also keeps burrowing critters and weeds from coming up into it. Good idea if you want to basically isolate that soil from the rest of the ground under it and may also help with keeping your moisture from draining all the way down into the yard.
Yes. You'd be surprised how persistent some are. They follow the water, and raised beds are usually a great place to find it.
the boards on the side will shrink, dirt and water will exit between the boards and look like shit. Just on the sides, not the bottom as you want that to drain usually.
I made a couple a few years back but I used doug fir because I'm cheap.
