'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Sumbish! Now wut?

Did you find the spot on the rear diff cover I forgot to paint? :dunno:
I think it's a TV valve issue by the more I research it. Need to really put a gauge on the trans and monitor pressure as it will tell if the valve is stuck. I'll bribe Harlan at work next sat to help me out with it.

Got a little done to prepare for the raptor liner. Stayed late and started scuffing the interior sheet metal. DA and 80 grit and red scotch brite pads were the ticket. Spent a couple hours on it and knocked it out. Gotta admit this body stuff is out of my element, but I scrubbed until I stopped seeing shiny paint. Here's a some shots of the progress.

My body shop manager let me have the run of his toolbox and the shop for the afternoon. He came in as I was cleaning up and saw my progress. He was going to help today, but had a crisis at home he had to attend to. He said if he gets bored tomorrow (he's not a big football fan) he might come back to the shop and shoot it. If not the truck is lined up to go to the exhaust guy next sat. Getting some stuff done at least.

Get this done?

No. My body shop manager didn't get away from home sunday. His new wife was having a crisis still, so I had told him Saturday not to get himself in the doghouse on my account.

An update on the exhaust came in though. The guy doing the install has pushed up the date to this Thursday.

Didn't get to spray the raptor liner today, but I did have one of my Tech's sort out my TV cable issue. It was wayyy to tight. Fired it up and took it for a spin and it finally hits all 4 gears!

It actually moves out really well. Still has a stumble off idle but then it starts hauling the mail. That little 5.3 will roast the tires if you want it to. Yee haw! I was able to throw a dealer plate on it and run it down the street to put some fuel in it. But its first time I've driven on the street in my k5 in a year one month and thirteen days since the 75 shelled the 12 bolt. Words can't express my happiness.
I will say this the truck is tight. As in no weird rattles, squeeks or other odd noises. It just feels solid even going over bumps. So different from a swiss cheese 75 with worn out body bushings and flexy body. Plus the top isn't rattling at the windshield header since its not a full top.
Next phase interior and tuning.

Some day I hope to find another K5 that resembles this build. very happy for you!

Thanks! I'm so pleased with how it's turning out. The sound is awesome and the truck drives great. This K5 is 180 degrees from the 75 in just about every way. I really loved the 75, probably so much I really didn't see the problems with it. The 91 just doesn't have the issues the 75 had. A clean slate. We can focus on fun stuff rather than slugging away at replacing all the sheetmetal one panel at a time.

Funny note. I was back in the bodyshop tonight before I left and I found out the body shop manager has had at least 3 people what the Blazer is behind the shop and if it's for sale. He told them it's mine and it isn't for sale. I know I'll never sell it, but it is flattering to have people asking about it.

Decided to grab lunch today by taking the K5.3 to go get it. Hopped in and grabbed a sammich from Jimmy Johns. Took a quick video on the way back. It's a little shaky since I'm trying to drive, hold onto my iced tea and take the video. Also, the major clanging noise is the back glass rattling in the gate. You can hear the stumble and what sounds to be a new issue, hunting idle when you come to stop. Without a tach on it, it's hard to say how much the idle moves, but you can hear it.

The blazer is getting it's turn in the booth. Raptor liner is getting sprayed. Plus I brought up the tuffy console to spray too.

This just in from the booth! Raptor liner is done! Big kudo's for my body shop manager to knock this out of the park! He sent some pics for me to drool over until I come back to work Monday!

I love it! I owe him some beer and pizza for the job he did!

Thanks guys. The amount of effort put in on the liner was underestimated by both me and Eric (the body shop manager). We both figured a couple hours to mask and about the same time or less to shoot. Well, Eric has a pretty heavy case of OCD which is good for what he does but he spent closer to 4 hours wrapping what wasn't going to get sprayed. Spraying took about a hour and a half. Mostly because he wanted a consistent finish that meant he had to take slow passes with the gun. He sweated the details for sure and it shows.

I'll probably be Driving it home this weekend! I sold my Dad's El Camino to my lube tech that I need to deliver to him. Since he lives up in Canon where we work, I'll drive the Elky up there Saturday and just drive the K5.3 back. I'm sure it's going to take a detour to the Larry's house on the way to let him run it around.

Only negative, the console didn't get shot. Eric actually went through 5 bottles of product to cover the inside. The Raptor liner kit comes with 4 bottles, thankfully we've sprayed a few customer's rigs recently and he had an extra bottle to go with. So I think in lieu of lining the console it's going to get a coat of satin black to blend in with the floor. Now to order a vinyl floor kit.
