'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
I am glad to see that engine go into use.
Me too. I remember when you had it. Is my memory right on where it came from? I know it’s a reach back into the memory bank but do you remember the mileage on it? What truck was the pan modified to fit?

I’m excited to have the biggest piece of the puzzle secured. The rest is simple. After Larry goes into his details on it he’ll have the engine ready to swing in soon. I’ll head down for a weekend where him, myself and bill rip the old one out and stuff the fresh one in.

Damn I miss driving that stupid thing.

He is on here. I can not remember his screen name. Go figure. Lives in the springs on Fort Carson. Around 40k, I was told. Truck was totalled.

Ok I that comes back in my memory not that you mention that. He was in the army and my memory of the 40k or so miles on it matches with yours.

Can’t remember the guys name for the life of me either.

Wow, that engine looks so good I would be tempted to just swap the oil pan and drop it in (you know, with an 8th coil just for good measure ;)). Good news that it has the later CPS and later oil pressure sensor. Which cam sensor setup is it and are those the same as your previous engine?

The only one who shows in that area on the members map is az_762_nato. I do not think it was him.

I am sure @Bent77 would remember who it is. Mind like a steel trap.

Schwan's trucks actually ran propane, not Natural Gas. Eitherway, they ran clean! :waytogo:

The propane system was pretty slick and PSI actually bought the rights to their system for use on the 8.8L that PSI sold us (Navistar = International Trucks / IC Bus). We used that exact Schwan's propane system on our school buses from 2017 to 2023. In fact, the final 8.8L school bus rolled off the line just before the first of the year and will be replaced by the Cummins 6.7L fuel agnostic engine for the 2026 model year that can be had in gasoline, propane, CNG and diesel flavors...all based on the same Cummins 6.7L architecture were all well used too. Going to be pretty slick engine

You told me it was Isuzu swapped

Propane engine run the same hard parts? Compression the same?
As far as the 8.1L, yes the propane engines were the same internals, as gas. 8.1s had hardened valve seats as standard which is a must for running propane. Now then, on LS, they did have higher compression options for alt fuel engine running on propane and CNG. We built a few thousand Workhorses for UPS Canada running on propane. I'd have to go spec sheets but those particular LC8 engines (L96 6.0L for alt fuels) had like a 10.1 compression ratio. Those UPS Package Cars honked well! But they only got like 6 MPG as propane isn't very efficient....its just cheap, especially in Canada so it's still cheaper to run than gas or diesel for those Canucks...or at least it was 10 years ago

Iir the Honda civic cng we had I our fleet were 13 to 1. Almost had performance. I wouldn't take out except for test drives after repairs. Only 8 gal tank in those

I wonder if I hurried up and swapped the ready to run L29 from my tan K5 into Rob's tan K5 and kept the 8.1 if he'd notice :sneaky: View attachment 469079
Hmm, I might be old but I could tell the difference alone by feel. I’d just have to Ray Charles my way over the intake to figure it out.

Though I’ve been out of the truck long enough I’d be happy to jump into a tan blazer as long as it ran.
