'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
It's great to see the fun that can be had playing with the trucks they built!!

Awesome!

Fun trip for sure. Wish we would have hit more snow up there. The snow pack was better than some years but not as good as others. Our heavy snow months are still to come. Next time the Polar Bear is wearing the Q78 Super Swampers though. While the DuraTracs do well, they just don't slice through the deep stuff like Swampers.

Bummed my GoPro's turned out pretty sucktastic and I really didn't get many pictures. Perfect excuse for a Februrary or March trip!

That is the point isn't it? The beauty of these trucks is they can be built and used. Unlike other car projects where where the end up garage queens or trailered everywhere. I had not driven my stuff on this run for three years. It killed me to ride in somebody else's rig. So happy mine was ready and did so well.

Kinda funny, light truck vs heavy truck.
.

That little Tracker is one of my techs from work. The damn thing is so simple and works well. Like an overgrown side by side with plates. Just a 1" coil spring spacers on all 4 corners and slightly oversized tires from stock. It floats on the crust. Deep stuff hangs it up, but he breaks out the chains and keeps going.

Looks like fun.

I find I only ever really need my lockers on flat ground, as that is the times I tend to not go fast enough, and these things are heavy...

Here are some more pics of the fun. Just past the deep spot we got 5 Heeps and a Dodge in one shot.

Now this guy was trying to prove something. Might have been since he was the only Ford with a bunch of heeps and Chevys. He was pushing snow with his bumper and his 37's were digging to china hitting dirt. Still didn't stop. When forward progress stopped he refused help to get out. Just threw the 435 in reverse, dumped the clutch and hammer down. Took well over 5 minutes to back out. Funny stuff.

Here's a view from behind where Larry's tires got swallowed up by the deep stuff.

The Tracker following me. He later told me I was pissing him off with my carving in the snow. I laughed and told him I was giving him a second set of ruts to follow. Between Larry's and my tracks he should have a set he could follow. Problem was his is so short with no traction devices in the diffs, one he got in my tracks he had to go where I went. He was still able pull through but he didn't have enough size to break out on his own path.

Big burb, wider exo cage and narrow chute through trees = stripped bark.

Speaking of Birds, I did make an attempt to fly the drone to get some pics and video, but the wind was too strong. Light breezes move that thing all over. Even on the first flight the wind pushed it right at Larry's head. Thank goodness for the blade gaurds. Still nailed him in the neck and side of his head. The drone got grounded at that point.

Man, that looks like a blast.
Some of my best times were snow wheeling in the mountains.
And I've never done it with a "built " truck
Just a stocker with 33's and a set of snow chains, 12 pack and full tank of gas.

I can relate to getting stuck in a rut of the other trucks Our typical trail breaker ran 39's
No comparison to 33's and no lift.

Nobody says you hafta wait until summertime to squeeze in a Yooper wheeling trip, Brian. We have plenty of snow trails around here. Might be time to resurrect this scene?

Rob, thanks for the inspiration. You just might start a chain reaction here.

I am actually totally game for that. No one says just the Western boys get to have all the fun.
Maybe an annual new years day run starting 2018?
I need 2017 to finish my truck...I hope.
Or I could trash it up with dumpy the K30

Dumpy the K30 would fit right in with Dumpy the MilitaryTruck. :thumb:

When I lived in MI, we would fly back for the holidays and it used to be just Larry in his K10, our buddy Bill in a J20 Jeep and me riding along. We would hit the trail with just the two trucks. Nothing special. Larry had no traction devices, 350, 465 and his Q78 Swampers. The J20 had a lincoln locked rear diff, 35's and a winch. We always had a ball. I moved back and the first snow trip my old 75 went on had 31's the same worn out 350 from Larry's truck (he upgraded to a 454) and Bill still had the J20. I didn't break trail back then. Had to get yanked out of trouble, but that's part of the fun. It's nice to have my 91 built up enough to handle the task, but it's not a requirement. How "built" the truck is shouldn't stop you from going out, just don't do it alone! More fun in a group, safer too.

Glad we can inspire, it's just having fun. It's what we got the trucks for in the first place! Those of us in Colorado don't have the patent on New Years snow runs. Go do it! You want to know the main reason for new years to play in the snow? It's a day pretty much everybody has off from work. We can pretty much bank on that. We will probably do another run in late Feb or March as that's when our area in the mountains gets the most snow dumped on it.

Here's a new video from the start of the trail. I sped up the footage on the first section since it was just rolling down the snowy road, nothing too exciting.

Cool! Almost like I was there! Definitely going to have to have you edit my GoPro’s since the software doesn’t want to run on my computer.

I'll grab it next time I'm over.

Here's the next video. Getting to see a lot of somebody's taillights.
