'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
So are you still converting to SYE?
If not I have the tail housing from when we did the SYE on my Crawlabago you can have.
Yeah, got the Tom Woods kit in the garage right now. I wasn't too concerned over the slip yoke housing for that reason. But the rear bearing housing is a killer to momentum. I had to deliver parts today so I didn't call the guys back up in Erie to see what they had.
 
What side housing do you need?
All of them. :haha:

Joking aside I have both sides in the garage that need cleaned up. The rear bearing housing is the main one I need.

The shop I got my trans from also rebuilds t-cases and may have the part I need. I talked to them yesterday and they needed the casting number off of mine to make sure they have it. So I’ll call them back today with the number.

If that don’t pan out there are a couple complete cases for sale on fb cheaper than the rear bearing housing from Torqueking.
 
Well, my trans shop called me back today. He pulled the last one he had off a rebuilt unit to help a guy at another shop.

So if either of you has casting number C-16969 in hand I'm a buyer. Let me know.

I think I'm going to keep the old broken one. I know a couple of guys locally that Tig weld that might be able to fix it for a spare.

I'm sure you know this but it's next to impossible to clean oil soaked aluminum well enough to weld strong enough to not fail.

If I can get to my parents house this weekend I will definitely take a look for you!
 
I know a guy who welds up all sorts of things at a local fab shop. He has even repaired some things for me on our trucks. I would check into repairing it too.

That's what I did with my cracked bell housing. I paid a local shop to clean and weld it. I only had that truck for 2 or 3 years after that, so I couldn't vouch for long-term durability. But it survived the trauma & vibration of the broken crankshaft thrashing the input bearing housing. Seeing that it held out better than the cast iron bolted to it, I'd say it was strong enough.

At work we routinely weld up oily castings. Mostly steel or iron, but I can think of at least twice recently that we've repaired dirty aluminum castings. It is possible, when the casting is properly cleaned.

In summary...find yourself a good TIG shop. You only cracked a small portion of the housing. It might be fixable.

Hey kids this is how we did stuff before YouTube. Gasp! Books!

Old fart alert for sure, but there is just something about the tactile feel of service manuals, the smell of them is just a reminder of a different time. Printing pages from the computer isn’t the same.

I remember when I was a Chevy Technical Assistance we each had a full set of service manuals for the current model year and we had 5 previous years worth in cabinets within our group. The books were like having a key to the candy shop and I was in a very happy place.

I know to some the books are a pain in the ass to find stuff but it always came easy to me. The logic behind them clicked with my odd brain.

But I will say this for anybody that is up and coming in this hobby invest in some factory service manuals for your ride. It’s worth it. There’s a book for the model of truck like C/K, R/V, S/T and then there is the unit repair manual I just picked up. The unit repair manual covers the main components like the engine, transmission, axles, power steering, etc. Think of it this way, the service manual shows you how to remove or replace a major component, the unit repair manual shows you how to tear down and reassemble those parts off the vehicle.

Old fart tangent off. Buy a book kids!

That's a distant 2nd place for me. Not quite as easy to "thumb" through as the book. But if you can't find the book for sale it's the best way to go.
