'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Thanks! It was cool to hang out and check out the shop and your truck too. It was good test run before the desert trip. My side trip to Erie was a bust but it did allow me to check out the new Bucc-ees. What a zoo that place is on a holiday. Not sure I need to go out of my way to go back.
I live about 7 miles from Bucee’s, I drove by Friday afternoon and it was crazy busy can’t imagine how it was the rest of the weekend.

I don't understand the draw of Bucc-ees
I don't either but I have also never been in one. I imagine it being a shit show inside and i'll want to leave.

The are building one in AZ not to far from me and I'll eventually stop in when I'm out that way.

It’s a shit show for sure. Absolutely no parking because the lot was full and inside was a madhouse. The bbq station in the middle is nuts as they start singing when a new batch of brisket comes in to chop up for sandwiches.

If you are not a people person or dislike crowds stay away. Myself, I was laughing my ass off at the sheer stupidity of the entire operation. I had to see it in person to see what the fuss was. I’ll admit I’m not sure I get it. It’s a huge gas station with tons of merch and Cracker Barrel type section of stuff and huge food operation. My brisket sammich was ok. It’s definitely a case of quantity over quality as far as the bbq goes. I will say this the staff was super nice, professional and helpful.

I know this I’m not going out of my way to go to one again. But if I see one on the road I’ll probably stop.

I don't get the Buccee's craze either. Everyone I know think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but to me it's just an overcrowded gas station. More of a tourist trap than anything.

If you ever get into one, buy the Beaver Nuggets. I have only been in one once. Early on a Saturday. Was still busy and very noisy. So not my kind of place.

I saw a billboard for beaver nuggets….that’s what drew me in…..taste like shitty Carmel corn. Cinnamon sugar were slightly better.

They are setting sales records but they're under staffed. Bad thing for the people that work there is that corporate is impressed they are doing so much with so few. They are flying managers in from other locations to see how they're doing it.

Welp, it’s that time of year. I’ve been quietly getting my stuff together for the trip. Shakedown run to Greeley last week to see @mrk5 was flawless. The truck just needed packed, greased and looked over. That’s done.

100 miles of highway to Larry’s place after work today after work went perfectly. Having some frosty ones in the shop and shoving off at o-dark thirty.

Target is valley of the gods to meet up with the crew and trail numero uno is hole in the rock. The rest of the week is up in the air from there.

Garmin tracking to find my carcass if anything goes wrong is below.

This is on my way up to Moab, curious to see this trip report! On the road there isn’t much at all but the scenery makes me wonder.

Glad the k5 is out on a run! You guys come pretty close to me, we should link up when I convert mine over to overland mode.

Not gonna lie. Today was a good day. To quote Ice Cube. Hole in the rock tail is no joke. We stopped 13 miles b for the end and at the average speed we were carrying it’s another solid day to get to the end.

Thank goodness tail boss Bill found a flat spot we could park in as a group. Because I was smoked. Had enough of the heat, the load inside the camper shifting on me and generally annoyed. Of what? Not sure. Maybe my man boobies were shaken too much. But the trail was spicy enough that if we took it further it would only get worse. As it was I was already at a half tank. With two Jerry cans onboard I thought for sure I would not let fuel go bad from sitting a week or two.

Grand total of maybe 15 miles today. Took all day to do it too.

Climbing out of hole in the rock was sketchy. More on that later.

Early camp set up and hanging out. Somebody over served me last night. Gonna have to take it easy tonight. Maybe one spicy Bloody Mary. We will see if I behave or not. Camp is not level and not smart to be stumbling around on.

How’s the moobs?
I can report no black eyes from bouncing them on the trail. Though I’ve lost some weight so that probably helped too. :haha:

I did totally end up on my ass at one point today. The trail to camp tonight crosses a low spot where water drains through. No main running water but a muddy section with overgrown trees lining the trail. The campers weren’t going to fit. Being a desert run nobody packed a bow saw or anything to trim up limbs. So I go full Captain Cave Man (that’s an old fart reference kids, look it up) on the dead limbs by just breaking them off.

The last and biggest limb was 5” in diameter jutting across the trail enough to be in the way. It’s dead anyway so I just start pulling it backwards. Crack comes from the branch but not broken yet. I pull four more times and on the last one it broke. Sending me swiftly ass over teakettle. Larry laughed his ass off when I fell.

Trail cleared we went back to driving to camp.
