'91 K5 Four Wheel Camper

This is the build for my 1991 V1500 Blazer, AKA the K5.3. It started out life being sold to the U.S. Government with a 350 TBI/700r4/241 combo. 4 years with a 5.3/700r4 Combo and now moving to an 8.1L Vortec and NV4500 5-speed.
Any chance 241 driver drop will have some of the same parts?
There is a lot of those in the wrecking yards.

Internal yes.
External not so much
Well desperation spurs exploration I’ve found. But the questions posed by you guys got me thinking. I called ORD on the off chance they had a core 241 I could get the housing from. I forgot who answered the phone but he advised they didn’t. Told him what I needed and he nonchalantly threw back at me to get one for a driver drop. He mentioned people trip over the driver drop cases trying to locate unicorn 2 year only pass drop version. Pretty simple to swap the housing and tone ring to convert a cable speedo 241 to vss for a ls swap.

So since I called early in the week I couldn’t get to the boneyard I found a driver drop housing on eBay for cheap and clicked buy it now. Checked agains my case and the broken housing. Looks like it works.

Main differences are the clocking of the speed sensor and the passage for the oiling.

The big boss for the oil passage lines up 95% with the machined surface on the case. Enough that it will seal up with the prescribed RTV used on these. E3E1E8B4-2120-49F1-AF40-73F59284C8E2.jpeg

I’d rather use the correct one so I’ll see how the fixed one looks and make a final decision when I put it together.

It is very promising though. One way or another I’ll have what I need. I need to wash out the spare housing as it’s absolutely filthy inside. I need to sort out a couple special tools to make getting a couple of the bearings out easier.

Happy to know I’ve got a path to follow at least.

double ouch

That's the problem. The swap crowd knows the vss 241 is how to make the late model transmission work. The prices have been elevated for a while.

I wonder if you could put that same housing on a 208 and make it a vss?

I don't know. I doubt it though. The 208 does not have a separate rear bearing housing and slip yoke housing.

But if you needed to put VSS on a 208 it's just easier to go to this guy and get his kit to put VSS on a 208.

Dang well that was easy.

Says the guy that took a 5.3 ls for a gen 7 big block in his 91 square

Not a whole lot of movement. I got the correct pass side drop rear bearing housing from @fourxpete and other than some cleanup it's going right into the mix. Thanks dude. I didn't do anything last weekend as I ran to Pueblo to say hi to my buds down there in front of the holiday. I did rescue my new-to-me winch though. 1977 vintage Warn 8274. It fits in with my plan to drop into the @Engineered Vintage front bumper sitting on my doorstep this afternoon when I got home. I want that built vintage accessory-type vibe to go along with the camper. KC's may get tossed into the mix too.

I spent my downtime between calls this week researching updating the 8274. I have a laundry list of part numbers at work. The basics will emulate the current 8274-70 model currently offered by Warn with a 10,000-pound rating. The really cool fact is that the updated rating doesn't come from anything mechanical within the winch at all. It's all electronic. A 6.5 hp motor and a solid-state albright contactor relay are the main changes. I've got the numbers for the service kits for the brake/clutch and the lower housing seals/thrust washers to rebuild it right. I think the teardown/reassembly should be pretty fun to do. All in at my price for the parts, the winch itself and synthetic rope I'm still going to be at a third of what the retail price is for the new model.

I moved some stuff around and snuck a peek in the boxes. Wow...

Really nice stuff for sure.

The quality of the cuts are amazing.

The winch is crusty, but has good bones. My personal favorite is the quality clips on the main power and ground cables.

In a lot of the research I've done, it's pretty common to have the free-spool handle freeze up and stick in or out. To my surprise the handle pulled out to the free spool position on the second try and I could even feel the detent.

By the date code, it's an old one. IJ7, which if I decoded it right, came out on July 14th 1977. The relay cover and metal 4-pin control plug also point to 1977 vs 1987.

Nothing going on with the truck sitting at Larry’s place waiting for an engine. But it is the crawlabago’s birthday today. Built on 12/7/90 In Flint Michigan. Your present will be late, but it will be more than four two liter bottles of soda. :haha:

Nothing going on is incorrect. It’s rotting in front of the shop at @Larry ’s place

we call it the dead brown buffalo

Who are you? :haha:

While you are *technically* correct, once Señor Larry gets caught up on some chores and other little projects he’s going to start pulling stuff apart outside and cleanup things. The actual swap should take a weekend when I come down.
